Competitive Renovations put new roofs on my house and detached garage in mid November 2023. Prior to their start, bundles of shingles were delivered on October 25. I was not home. Significant ruts in my lawn were noticed on the following day. The delivery vehicle was the obvious cause. Casual mention was made to ***** in Competitive's office but my focus was very much on the urgency to complete the roofing due to the impending winter season. Practical thinking made the lawn issue easier to address come spring 2024. Photos of the damage were sent to ***** at her request by text on November 6.The last day of work for the roofers was on November 16. (Their vehicles did further damage.) The last contact from Competitive, a simple payment receipt in an email, was dated December 16. The letters attached to this filing are self explanatory. Both remain without responses. (Earlier correspondence exists.) My letter was delivered by hand.I must have my lawn repaired by an appropriate maintenance company or I won't be able to cut my grass over a large area. And it will happen sooner than ever this year. I have one estimate with another quote forthcoming. There are further contractual concerns with Competitive Renovations to be discussed at a later date. The help of some type of third party feels obligatory.Business Response

We received by email and a hand delivered letter regarding the concerns for the customer on January *******.
***** told the customer to leave it with her for a couple of weeks and she would get back to him.
In mid February she called the customer and left a voice mail, offering a extended warranty
a no extra charge to the customer ($110.00). , a sample of the shingles and that the lawn would be taken care of in the Spring of 2024.
We are planning to repair the lawn at the end of April 2024 beginning of May 2024.Customer Answer

Complaint: 21445292I thank Competitive for their prompt response and their words of agreement to repair my lawn. Attached are two estimates in similar amounts. Simple though the repairs may seem, the area of concern is a large one over a lawn of significant size. It would be best to have a proper maintenance company fix the problems, a company with the expertise to trust without worry and a scheduled date to count on. I don't intend to enhance a golf course but I will need to act sooner than Competitive's proposal to ensure softer soil conditions. Both estimators advised ASAP. My file can be considered as closed if Competitive agrees to go forward with one of my choices (or suggests another company to consult and consider). In truth, a company other than Competitive did the primary damage, so my property should be an insurance claim of some sort.
My filing and this response apply only to the issue of my lawn and for simplicity, that's how it should remain. There is a statement or two to disagree with in Competitive's response but more importantly, contractual matters to deal with later.
I must end by expressing disappointment with Competitive for not accepting my offer of mediation through ******** CCRO. It was a free service and it only required a simple phonecall as a beginning.

I have attached 4 photos of the work that Competitive Landscaping division has done. I have talked with *********************** the President of the company
and I mentioned the timeline for repairs being done at the end of April beginning of May, and he states that we may be able to do it sooner, depending on the
weather (i.e.; rainfall).

Competitve Renovations installed new roofs on my house and garage. Their work completed on November 16, 2023. The invoice attached was paid in full under the Ontario Renovates program. It was $4,925, taxes excluded, above the estimate for replacing plywood and rafter repairs. The estimate and the invoice stated: "if any rot is found, pictures are taken and shown to the owner." No pictures were shown to me. Rot was mentioned but only after the repairs had been made and most of the roofing had finished. There was an expectation to replace some wood. The amount used was extreme. It feels fair to have questions. Consequently, I would like to receive: 1/roof sketch of where sheets of plywood and rafter supports were added 2/photos showing rotted wood in place as first observed, if possible 3/paper copies of all applicable warranties: shingles, applicable materials, Competitive's workmanship 4/full manufacturer's description of the shingle used and a physical sample (no shingles were left behind after roofing)Business Response

*****,
In response to your recent complaint, your Invoice is your warranty, and it also states the color and manufacturer name. You can also visit the *** Website, for further information regarding the shingles.
You can stop by the showroom to pickup a sample board of your color. We are open Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Your roof was the main concern, and all we were hired to do originally was this as it was an emergency repair, the attached photos depict the significant rot and that the crew came upon, they worked quickly to repair the back of the home as it was exposed to the elements, the back area was very unsafe, when our crew put the ladders on the deck, because of the rot the ladders through the deck.
The Temporary repair was only temporary to keep the exterior elements until you got an engineer do drawings that was capable of doing building permits , which then could have been contracted out.
As stated in an email On October ******, the attached pictures were sent to you, and **** replied,
All of this was brought to your attention and you could not afford to make wall repairs, we were hired to shingle your roof. Below if the pictures of the mess we had to clean up for you. We went over and beyond to temporarily get these walls watertight for you. You neglected your house quite blaming your issues on others your to blame.
We feel that we have done the job that Competitive was hired to complete.Customer Answer

This response addresses only the nature of my complaint. There are statements within Competitive's reply to disagree with. I will do so in another email shortly. There were four items requested. I have made the same requests over many months in emails, a formal letter and by stopping by their office. All efforts have been without success. That's why I submitted this complaint! Simply, please put a package together. Drop it off to my address or I'll even offer to pay the postage.
First, all of the photos sent (and seeing them for the first time except one with an asterisk) are not photos showing my roof. That was my contract. The roof. See the attached invoice.
Second, the invoice did not contain any warranty wordings, Competitive's workmanship in particular.
Third, I saw two different packages of shingles last November. What was used? Would an old purchase order or manufacturer's invoice be handy?
Thanks for your considerations.
Sincerely,
***** *****Customer Answer

(please forward to Competitive)
It may help to add clarity to my reply of November 6.
The photos of most use would show the rotted wood in place on the roof as first observed. A sketch by hand of where **** was added would be helpful. The invoice exceeded the estimate by over $5000 because of these repairs. This is the reason for my interest.
The primary warranty to fully understand is Competitive's workmanship. Are formal words available? What does it include? How long does it run?
A sample of the full shingle (more than a board sample) is necessary to help choose the colour of new soffit/fascia. Navigating a manufacturer's website without their precise identifying numbers seems like a challenge for any ordinary consumer. It was quite odd for there not to have been a leftover bundle or two or a single shingle to use as a reference after the roofing concluded.
If Competitive wishes to submit additional details, it would be better to do so to the Better Business Bureau directly. Please disregard the earlier offer for the use of my address. My intent was to speed up the resolution. It's now just as obvious to make use of the service we're actually in.
There remain statements in Competitive's reply necessary for comment. They are related to but outside of this complaint.

Attached is the Gaf Warranty.
As previously mentioned the Color of your Shingle is Charcoal, ******** is the company that we purchase the
shingles from there is no other company we are dealing with, so I am not sure what 2 packages you are referring to
You may have looked at 2 color samples.
Sincerely,
