In early May 2023, we asked Reno Kings for a quote for our roof. On May 4, 2023, we accepted their quote. At Reno Kings' request, on May 8th we gave them a bank draft for a $10,000 deposit for the job, corresponding to about 30% of the total estimate. From that day forward, we did not receive any proactive communications from anybody at Reno Kings regarding the job. Every time we contacted the company, we were told that we were "next on the list".

In early October, five months after we gave Reno Kings our deposit, we still had not heard from them. Given how late in the year it was, and how long it was taking the Reno Kings crews to complete very simple roofs at our neighbors, we contacted the owner and asked for a refund of our deposit, so that we could hire a roofer who would be able to complete the job before winter.

To his credit, the owner replied promptly, indicating that he understood our position, and agreeing to refund our deposit. That was October 6th. Since then he has given us excuse after excuse for delaying our refund. By now it's too late to do a roof on our house.

Reno Kings can resolve this complaint very easily, by promptly refunding us our deposit.

    Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:

What the owner says is accurate: he is working with the client.

But, he has been working with the client for over 2 months now.  So far the company has refunded less than 20% of what they owe us.

It's only once the company has paid what they owe us in full that I will agree with the business' response. And if and when that happens, I will enthusiastically agree.

We contracted Reno Kings Construction, to build, deliver and set up a back yard office pod. The project was sold as a ‘turn-key’ service. There was a fee of $2,000 added to the invoice to cover the delivery, set up, and electrical hook up. During our visit to Charlottetown on June 11, 2022, we met with **** and discussed the grade of our garden. It was agreed that the Office Pod would be installed on screw piles.

In the lead-up to the delivery of the office pod, we shared photos & videos of the property. We also made ourselves available numerous times for **** to visit the proposed installation site of the office pod. He did not end up making any such visit, where any issues regarding grading, or placement could have been identified.

On the evening of September 13, 2022, we discussed during a phone call several concerns regarding the installation of the Office Pod that had taken place from September 12 – 13, 2022. We later reiterated these concerns in an email dated September 15, 2022 and we have yet to have the issues resolved.

    ISSUES AWAITING RESOLUTION

    1. Nova Scotia Power Permit

There were several items that were outlined in the electrical inspection that need to be resolved for **** ****** ***** to close out the permit:

The building is missing an exterior light near the main door
The exterior plug does not have a while-in-use cover
There is no proof of the wiring being inspected during rough-in
There are no megger results noted
There is a wire in the panel labeled ‘smoke detector’ but no physical smoke detector installed
    No proof of CSA

    2. Foundation Structure

We agreed that the office would be installed on screw piles only to find upon completion that the office pod was actually resting on cement blocks and scrap wood. The foundation is unprofessional and liable to fail. More importantly, it is not safe.

    3. Additional Requirements

Additional requirements for the structure to be safe are:

    Steps
    Handrail
    Siding on lower edge

    Business Response

    Date: 20/03/2023

    Good afternoon
Im very sorry to hear of this complaint. I hope this can be rectified, I have attached the electrical inspection and a copy of the contract with notes on the items that the customer was looking for but were not in contract. That is why they were not completed. There were conversations about many different options including screw piles but what was not the final decision and not put in the contract.  Our deliveries and set ups are done with blocks unless otherwise put in the contract due to the steep grade the delivery took much longer than expected.

    Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:

If Reno Kings is going to supply offices to other provinces, especially as a ‘turn key service’, it is their responsibility to ensure that it meets the necessary requirements in the jurisdiction that it is being delivered to.

We have contacted the Chief Electrical Inspector in PEI who has confirmed that the permit shows that the type of structure was listed by Reno Kings as a ‘storage unit’. He has advised that had the inspector been told that the unit would be used as an office and would be relocated to Nova Scotia, he would have carried out at least two inspections, and provided documents stating that. Knowing this, Nova Scotia Power has confirmed that in order for them to except this building they want a CSA inspection completed on it. There is a QPS division in Halifax, who can come inspect the building and certify it for Nova Scotia Power to sign off. It would be our expectation that Reno Kings will pay for this to be done.

In regards to the foundation, the only options that were discussed during our visit were screw piles or sono tubes. The unit we viewed in PEI was placed on sono tubes (see photo attached) hence why we did not request it be specified in the quote. If blocks were the plan from the beginning, I would have the same argument that it should have been specified in the quote seeing as it was never discussed with us.
Please also see attached a conversation I had with **** in November where he confirmed to us that he was scheduling the sono tubes.
Lastly, we have had a building inspector look at the office and he has advised that the current set-up does not meet the minimum standards. If the office was going to be placed on cement blocks, there is a specific set up and anchoring that is required to ensure it’s safety.

    Business Response

    Date: 31/03/2023

I understand our customers concerns and we will pay for the inspection to be done and will pay for any issues related to the inspection, so the building can be certified for nova scotia power to sign off on it. along with this we will anchor the building.
