I have a 13 YO granddaughter (GD). Excellent athlete. Attended a USAG gymnastics facility and had to cease due to acquiring a concussion. Swimming was suggested. She tried out and came to enjoy it. She attended the *********************** (***) summer session and was placed with her same age group. Teenagers as well as adults worked as volunteers to assist in teaching the younger teens different strokes. Concern#1: A female teen, responsible for showing the younger teens some techniques was consistently giving a male teenager most of her attention and and helped few teens however totally overlooked and not once made an attempt to teach my GD a single stroke, not until of course my GD asked for assistance by which she ended up teaching herself. The *** combine TEAM scores from other city entities is my understanding and places the top eight teens in a type of competition. Though my GD WAS NOT technically on a team, her mother received an email that my GD was one of the chosen. She was ecstatic. Concern #2: Out of three races she won medals for two, although a VOLUNTEER PARENT said she didnt touch the wall during the first race (the judges said she did) and during the second race her lane was NOT even called, BUT SHE SWAM! The third race started without her knowledge as she was resting; no one notified her. My daughter picked up her two medals (because no one issued her) and left trying to explain to my GD why they omitted calling her lane AND why a parent said she was disqualified. Understanding this is a summer session for children and some may not take it seriously, when dealing with young teens it is CRUCIAL to acknowledge and make an attempt to explain the way things are done. IF she did not qualify to race, SOMEONE should have communicated that to the parent. IF someone made a mistake, they should have accepted it, took the hit, and given my GD what she deserved. After all, its not the olympics, however lessons are learned. Unprofessional.
