Significant Delays and Misleading Information from Solidarity Healthshare:
I am writing to share my experience with Solidarity Healthshare, hoping it helps others make informed decisions. My family joined Solidarity because we believed in its mission of supporting Catholic values in healthcare. Unfortunately, our experience over the past two years has been deeply disappointing.
In November 2022, I contacted Solidarity’s customer service to address delays in the sharing of a few small medical bills from 2021 and 2022. I expressed concerns about their backlog and mentioned that my wife was pregnant, so we anticipated more medical needs in 2023. I was assured by customer service that the delays were caused by software issues that had been resolved and that bills were starting to be shared within 90 days. Based on this information, we decided to remain members.
However, nearly two years later, we have 19 unshared bills, ranging from 636 to 447 days old. Some of these bills have been sent to collections, creating unnecessary financial and emotional strain on our family.
In January 2024, we transitioned to a traditional insurance plan for our family’s healthcare needs. However, due to Solidarity’s guidelines, we were required to continue paying monthly shares to keep our older bills eligible for sharing. Despite faithfully paying these shares—$6,088 in 2024 alone—we have received no clear timeline or consistent updates on when these bills will be shared.
I want to caution potential members that while Solidarity promotes a faith-based mission, my experience suggests significant operational and possibly ethical issues. Promises of timely bill sharing were not honored, and the lack of transparency has eroded our trust in the organization.
I hope this review encourages Solidarity to address these systemic problems and prevents others from facing similar hardships.Initial Complaint

Solidarity Healthshare has not kept their agreement to pay qualified medical expenses (with member share money). I became a paying member in February 2018 and remained paying member until April 2023. During that time, they changed computer systems and their responsiveness and consistency to member needs fell apart. I submitted the following qualified medical expenses in a timely fashion during my full payment membership days. They still owe me $515.10 which they claim they will pay after they pay current members which is not appropriate because when I was a paying member, they did not handle this in a timely manner.Business Response

We have been contributing to Solidarity Healthshare for approximately 7 years. 2024 saw the first year that we needed to have medical bills shared over our personal annual share amount. I do understand this isn't insurance and I love being able to see whom I want. I have much better control over my health. I am an absolute supporter of Health Share Plans. I just wouldnt recomment this company anymore. I was told if I cancelled my membership, my bills would be paid but they would no longer be prioritized.Business Response

Solidarity is taking too long to pay bills. I had an accident in October of 2023. It is now January 2025, and the help line can only tell me that my claims are in process. If I dont want collection agencies calling me, I can either (1) call the hospital every month asking for an extension or (2) pay the bill myself and then submit the paid bill to Solidarity for reimbursement to me. I fear that if I choose #2, then I'll be an even lower priority to Solidarity.Since the accident I had changed from Solidarity to ********* so Im not a member of Solidarity anymore. The Solidarity help line has also told me that since Im not a member anymore my claims are a lower priority than active members. This wouldnt have happened if Solidarity had paid my bills in a reasonable amount of time! I have to enter a number below for what I paid, I tried to enter my monthly premium - it was $413/mo.Business Response

Hello *****,
We value the three years you were a Sharing Member with us and are committed to supporting your medical needs within the framework of our sharing community.
As a reminder, health share plans differ from insurance by operating as a voluntary sharing community rather than providing guaranteed payment for medical expenses. Active Members' medical needs are prioritized in the sharing process, with inactive Members needs being addressed subsequently.
We are pleased to inform you that three of your service dates are now ready to be shared, and the sharing process is actively underway. Once the medical needs are shared for payment, you will receive an Explanation of Sharing (EOS) in the mail.

I appreciate the reply from Solidarity, but the answer they provided is the same I've been receiving form the Helpline Since last May. When I called and spoke to a representative (last May), I was told that my claims were accepted and would "go out in the next batch". I've called them every month since then and have received the same answer every time. I don't see any difference in the answer we received from Solidarity now - "now ready to be shared, and the sharing process is actively underway". I want to see a specific date when the bills will be paid. Thank you.

Dear *****,
Thank you for sharing your concerns and for your patience as we work through this matter. I want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to address your medical needs.
As previously mentioned, three of your medical bills have been processed and are now ready to be shared. The sharing process is currently underway, and once completed, you will receive an Explanation of Sharing (EOS) outlining the details. While we cannot provide an exact date for when sharing will be disbursed due to the voluntary and community-driven nature of the sharing process, I want to assure you that your needs are actively being prioritized.
Additionally, we did grant a one-time charitable exemption for these bills to assist in expediting the process as much as possible.
If you have further concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact our *********** Team. We are here to support you and will do our best to provide timely updates as the sharing progresses. Thank you for being a valued part of our community and for your understanding as we work through this process together.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved. Although the business would not provide a date my bills would be paid, I don't see any other action coming from them except the corporate-speak that h=they replied with. I am counting (and hoping) that they will follow up in good faith.

My family and I have been members with Solidarity since December 1, 2019. We have always made our monthly share payment on time each month. Currently, I have over $26,000 worth of bills from providers most of which have been approved for sharing and have been waiting to be batched out for a long time. Two of those bills are from 2021. Fifteen of those bills are from 2023. Eleven of those bills are from 2024. Many of these bills are with debt collectors and have been for months/years. In addition, I have paid out of pocket for shareable expenses in an amount over $10,000. Seven of those reimbursement needs are from 2023 and thirty-one of them are from 2024. Every time I call Solidarity, I get the same answer: the bills have been processed and are waiting to go out on the next batch. It really seems like the monthly share amounts need to be increased if the bills cannot be paid in a timely manner. Waiting two or three years is not a timely manner. I have also been told by Solidarity that their new policy is that if a member decides to end their membership, then bills that were received while they were a member would no longer be eligible for sharing. I certainly hope that is incorrect information, but if it is true, there is really no way out other than either staying a member and doubling up with another healthshare organization until Solidarity finally catches up or leaving Solidarity and having to pay all of my outstanding bills out of pocket. I am requesting that all of my bills be batched for payment and that Solidarity's board address the shortfall of monthly share amounts that is not keeping up with the bills that are coming in.Business Response

Dear Mr. and Mrs. *****,
We are committed to serving you as a Member and facilitating the sharing of
your eligible medical bills according to our SHS Sharing
Guidelines. Health Share plans, such as ours, are arrangements where a
group of individuals voluntarily come together to share in each other’s medical
expenses, whereas health insurance offers guaranteed coverage for a set
premium. As a healthcare sharing ministry, medical expenses are shared by
Members each month. Medical expenses rise and fall continually so there cannot
be a guarantee of time to share. Once a medical need has completed processing
and awaiting sharing, the timeline may also vary depending on the availability
of incoming sharing funds, single case agreements, preferred providers etc.
Upon reviewing your account, we are pleased to inform you that 23 of
your service dates are now ready to be shared, and the process is actively
underway. Once your medical needs are shared for payment, you will
receive a copy of the EOS (Explanation Of Sharing) in the mail. To ensure HIPAA
compliance, we will be sending your billing details via secure email. Please be
on the lookout for an email shortly from Solidarity HealthShare.
Lastly, we would like to address the
concern regarding pending medical bills from 2021. After reviewing your
account, we can confirm that all medical needs from 2021 have been completed,
and an Explanation of Share (EOS) has been generated. Please feel free to
respond to our email with any further details, and we will be happy to assist
you.
Thank you for your patience and
attention to this secure process.

Dear Solidarity,
Thank you for the email informing me of the representative who will be assigned to resolving my inquiry. I will work with this individual to continue to come to a resolution. However, I do not accept Solidarity's response as a complete solution to the issues at hand. You responded to my complaint by essentially giving the same answer that I receive every time that I call Solidarity i.e. the bills have been processed and are waiting to be shared. I understand that this is a healthcare sharing ministry and that medical expenses rise and fall continually, and, thus, there cannot be a guarantee of time to share. However, as members, we entrust Solidarity with our sharing dollars, and we trust Solidarity to ensure that the member sharing amounts are sufficient to cover the bills that the members have in a timely manner. If this was a one-time problem where things got backed up, that would be one thing, but now over the course of several years, it is evident that Solidarity is not collecting enough sharing dollars to cover the bills in a timely manner. For several years now, bills have continually been backlogged multiple years, which makes it evident that the sharing dollars coming in are not sufficient to cover the bills in a timely manner. Solidarity needs to do something to address this issue. It is also obvious that this is not only me that has this issue. Lots of people have expressed the exact same issue on the Share Stream (and had their concerns removed from the Share Stream without any action/response from Solidarity) and also lots of complaints very similar to mine are logged on BBB.
Regarding the bills from 2021, I did find that these did, in fact, have an EOS generated, so thank you for that. However, these bills are still showing up in the portal as being "processed", which is what threw me off. It looks like someone just needs to clean up that part of the portal.

Dear Mr. *****,
Thank you for your follow-up. We are glad to hear that the information provided via email helped to address your questions regarding the bills from 2021 along with the 23 that have recently been matched with sharing dollars. We will review the portal to ensure that everything is updated appropriately, as your feedback about its functionality is valuable to us.
If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to help.Sincerely,

Dear Solidarity Healthshare,
Christ is Born! Glorify Him! Thank you for your response. However, the most important of my concerns was not addressed. Please review the text from my previous response that was not addressed, which is shortened here: "I understand that this is a healthcare sharing ministry...mine are logged on BBB."
What is Solidarity going to do to address the concern above? I appreciate the "one-time charitable exemption" as you have called it for the 23 bills that have been moved into the "ready for sharing" category. However, I think this effectively highlights the issue at hand. If it is a ONE-TIME exemption to have funds available to share bills most of which are at least 1.5 years old, it seems clear that there is no plan for making sure that this does not continue to occur. In fact, it is doing exactly the opposite by making it clear that this is a "one-time" thing. Plus, after spending lots of time and effort on the phone and email with Solidarity and trying to bring this issue to Solidarity through your own Share Stream (to avoid bringing this to a more public forum), it took a BBB complaint to get this "one-time charitable exemption". This seems to me to be far from any kind of sustainable business practice, and I hope others are not expected to do this same thing in order to have Solidarity address the issues at hand.
I continue to pray and hope that Solidarity will be able to address these concerns since it does truly stand out as one of the only, if not THE only, healthshare available that has Sharing Guidelines truly in line with the faith of our one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.
In Christ,
********

Broken leg May 14, 2024. ER and 3 days stay in hospital. Surgery to repair broken leg. Roughly $60,000 in medical bills. Approved for payment by Solidarity healthshare but they have not paid. Providers have turned bills over to collection agencies. Just want them to do what they said they would. 3 main outstanding bills are attached. My wife had a car crash in the summer of 2023. Solidarity has not paid one dime toward these bills either. I have not included her bills in this complaint.Business Response

I have asked countless times for an estimate as to when these bills will be paid. I always get the answer that it depends. It is a simple math solution. What is the total cost of outstanding bills divided by the monthly intake, less expenses. The only way this isn't so is if they are not paying in order of receipt. They surely know how many bills not paid were submitted before mine and can do the math. Beyond frustrating.Business Response

Hello *******,
We hope this message finds you well. We want to express our
appreciation for your membership in our Sharing community over the past six
years. Our health share ministry consists of individuals who voluntarily come
together to share their medical expenses, which distinguishes us from
traditional health insurance that guarantees coverage for a fixed premium.
At this time, we are unable to provide a specific date for
when we will be sharing eligible medical needs due to various factors.
Generally, we process bills in the order they are received then placing them
into a batch once they match sharing dollars. However, some bills may be shared
more quickly, such as those related to pharmacy services, Single Case
Agreements, or Preferred Providers. Conversely, certain bills may take longer
to process if they are incomplete or if we require additional information.
In addition, there has been an increase in healthcare costs
and the number of bills submitted by Members and providers. Due to inflation,
healthcare costs have continued to rise. To combat these increases and support
efforts to facilitate monthly shares to medical bills, the monthly shares were
recently adjusted in the 4th quarter of 2023. I appreciate your patience while
your medical needs are finalized.

Unacceptable. All major bills have been approved for sharing by Solidarity. I keep getting the same delay tactic. How can I ask a provider to wait for payment when I have no reason to believe these will ever be paid? All I get is the same "It depends on several factors" excuse. Give me a date the bills will be paid already! If you cannot do this, your business model is flawed and you need to go away.Initial Complaint

Solidarity has bills that are over 4 years old that have still not been paid. They owe us (for reimbursement) and creditors over $10,000. I am filing a complaint in hopes that Solidarity Healthshare will facilitate the sharing of my family's medical bills that have far exceeded the ‘average 120-day processing time’ that Solidarity advertises to its members. I have been a sharing member since 2017 (Member #**********. In the past year, we have paid a monthly share amount of $709 per month. I am attaching a spreadsheet outlining current processing shareable medical needs for my family.
Of these listed medical needs, 24 of them are over 12 months old (highlighted in red, totaling $2086 in reimbursements and $5408 in provider billings) and 6 of them are greater than six months old (highlighted in yellow, totaling $373 in reimbursements and $7736 in provider billings).
Specifically, I was just notified that billings from 2023 from the provider ******* ** ****** will be sent to collections this month if Solidarity does not give an estimated payment date, as it has been over a year since these dates of service. This provider has been very patient but needs to receive payment for the services rendered.
Respectfully, I hope that Solidarity can simply do what it advertises to its members, and facilitate the sharing of eligible medical expenses for its members in a timely manner. When processing times exceed what is advertised, it reduces my trust in this company and customer satisfaction. So much so, I am considering withdrawing my membership in the future. Thank you for helping resolve this matter for me and my family.Business Response

Hello ******
We are
committed to serving you as you were a Sharing Member for 7 years. Health
share plans are arrangements where a group of individuals voluntarily come
together to share in each other's medical expenses Health insurance offers
guaranteed coverage for a set premium. Please note that our system shows
you and your family have submitted 402 medical needs in your membership.
Research shows that 48 medical needs were waiting for sharing funds; 45 of
those 48 needs were processed under 120 days, and 3 were reprocessed over 120
days. Please note that the active members' medical needs are prioritized first,
with inactive members' medical needs being in line after that. Once the medical
needs are shared, you will receive a copy of the Explanation Of Sharing (EOS)
in the mail. Thank you for your patience and attention to this secure process. An email from Solidarity HealthShare will
be sent to you that includes the billing details. Feel free to reply at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding your bills.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do
not hesitate to contact our Member Care team directly.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I do not accept your response. My complaint is regarding Solidarity's inability to share my family's needs in a timely manner. The number of days in which a bill is internally processed is not helpful when the reason for my complaint is regarding the sharing of my family's medical needs.
In multiple responses your business made to consumers within the last month on Google, who issued you a 1-star rating for the same issues I am referring to, Solidarity responded:
"It is not uncommon for bills to take around ~120 days to complete being shared."
“The average sharing time for active members is ~120 days.”
"The average time to share is about 120 days from receipt of the bill."
I issued my complaint while I was still an active member-- on November 15th, 2024-- and even from that date, most of these needs had exceeded the 120-day sharing time frame you advertised. Can your office initiate sharing the oldest bills that have exceeded one year? These bills have exceeded the sharing timeframe you advertise to members by 300%. Please note that my request is entirely reasonable.Business Response

Hello ******
We hope this message finds you well. We want to
express our appreciation for your membership in our Sharing community over the
past seven-plus years. Our health share ministry consists of individuals who
voluntarily come together to share their medical expenses, which sets us apart
from traditional health insurance that offers guaranteed coverage for a fixed
premium.
Out of the 385 medical needs you and your
family have submitted, 48 are currently waiting for sharing funds. Please note
that processing time differs from sharing time. As you know, if a medical need
is submitted with all the requested information, it is completed in under 120
business days 97% of the time.
In terms of sharing funds for the submitted
needs, we cannot guarantee payments as our model relies on Members helping each
other.
Per our Sharing Guidelines, members are
encouraged to opt for Pro-Rata sharing or to increase their Monthly Share
Amount as outlined in sections VI.B.1 and B.2. We have attached the
Sharing Guidelines for your future research. As a reminder, the medical needs
of active members are prioritized first, followed by those of inactive members.
Although we strive to facilitate support for our members, please understand
that we cannot guarantee payment for medical needs. Once your medical needs
have been shared for payment, you will receive a copy of the Explanation of
Sharing (EOS) in the mail.
If you have any questions or concerns, please
do not hesitate to contact our Member Care team directly.Sincerely,

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I do not accept your response.
Regarding sections VI.B.1 and B.2., your description does not reflect the sharing guidelines, which states:
"In any given month, the available Monthly Share Amount payments may or may not equal the amount of Needs submitted for Sharing. If Eligible Medical Expenses exceed the available Shares to meet those Needs, the following actions may be taken by majority vote of the Board of Directors:
1. Pro-Rata Sharing. A pro-rata Sharing of Needs may be initiated, whereby the Members share a percentage of Eligible Medical Expenses within that month and hold back the balance of those Needs to be Shared the following month.
2. Increase in Monthly Share Amount. If the suggested Monthly Share Amount is not adequate to meet the Needssubmitted for Sharing, then the suggested Monthly Share Amount may be increased in sufficient proportion to satisfy the eligible Needs. This action may be undertaken temporarily or on an ongoing basis."
Additionally, the sharing guidelines state in section VI A that "Any amount contributed over the suggested Monthly Contribution will be a donation to Solidarity HealthShare Foundation, Inc." From what is visible about your foundation, it doesn't appear that an additional donation from me would assist in the sharing of my medical bills. I paid the suggested monthly share amount every month, per the vote of the Board of Directors. I don't understand why you would cite that part of the sharing guidelines in response to my complaint.
Since you are unwilling to acknowledge that you are misleading members by stating that "the active sharing time is about 120 days from receipt of the bill," can your office at least grant me full access to my member portal until ALL remaining bills have been matched with sharing dollars? I have the right to be able to check on the status of these needs through the member portal until they have been shared. Please advise.Initial Complaint

We are members of Solidarity Healthshare. My son was born 9 weeks premature in *********** and, as a result, had a NICU stay. It has been close to 2 years and our bills from that time are still unresolved. $25,001.68 of the bills have been with collections for more than a year, and the hospital says we still owe them $55,760.61. The only reason it isn't all in collections was because I was making a small monthly payment out of my own pocket. Those have stopped however, and I expect all of our debt will be in collections shortly. We have already paid in excess of our annual unshared amount and have been told that our bills are just waiting to be "batched out" for a very long time. Solidarity paid a couple of the bills, but only in part. I have multiple bills going through AMPS, where no headway has been made in the last 4 months. I'd really just like this resolved before the collector initiates a law suit. Our experience with the company has changed drastically since the birth of our daughter in ****. She also had a NICU stay, but it was all resolved within a few months. Solidarity should not be in business if they can't pay their members bills in a timely fashion.Business Response
