I think the company aspires to false advertising! They claim that the service is free and after answering 20+ minutes of questioning about your search, they then request money. I understand that companies need to make money, so they should say right up front what the cost is and be more transparent in their advertising. I closed their website and did not pay any money to open the report, because I was angered by their advertising practice which is misleading!

Quick version : Not a total scam... but be aware that they do use some very, VERY dodgy marketing practices. Read the warnings below. I used this service to check my own records, because I wanted to see if my arrest back in the ****s (literally for breaking a window) had resulted in an actual conviction or criminal record. And it worked for that. It showed me the court date and the disposition of the case. It also turned up a speeding ticket that I got many years ago in ******* (for whatever reason, this is the only speeding ticket that showed up). Anyway, the result was helpful to me; it saved me from having to spend time and money requesting my record through "official" channels (which requires you to be fingerprinted, wait in line at various offices, etc). Now the bad news:1) Yes, they make you wait through ***** minutes of nonsensical "Scanning the database now" screens. 2) Yes, they wait until you've spent those ***** minutes before asking for money or naming a price. (It's about $30 per month). 3) Yes, the $30 is a recurrent charge, although you can cancel your subscription online (at least they don't make you do it on the phone). 4) Yes, there are hidden fees. (An extra $4 to download the results I paid for). This part really comes close to breaking consumer protection laws, but on the other hand... it's $4. 5) DO NOT give them your email address. They will sell it to every spammer on the planet. (I used a throwaway one). 6) DO NOT, for the love of God, give them your phone number to "verify" your account. From what I've read, this will mean that your phone number gets spam texts forever. Just give them a throwaway email address. The funny thing is that at the end of the day, they provided a useful service. It's a shame that they feel it necessary to use every shady marketing trick in the book.Truthfinder
