      Its a scam. Definitely illegal. I never opened a retirement account with this ********************** because I knew before hand empower was a company that wants to drag in peoples money with force and without your consent, in fact they stay hidden while your working for a company so you dont know who they are. The employers you previously worked for probably opened up a retirement account for you automatically with or with out your consent. They will pay consequences, they are outnumbered and have a lot of poor reviews. Ask employers beforehand if they work with empowered for retirement, its probably mostly companys that operate with ADP. They try to scare you, threaten you with consequences if you dont fit their agenda.

      Horrible customer service with representatives that speak horrible non understandable English and zero knowledge. I have tried to close an account for two months now and still am not able to finish such a simple task with Empower

      I have been trying to 4 days to get my addresses changed! I have NEVER been so unsatisfied with the outcome! I do what is said to do and they can not change my address. In order to update my address I have to TERMINATE my position that *** worked for almost 15 YEARS! This is absolutely ridiculous! Misconceptions,miscommunication,misunderstanding! Ive done everything the reps have asked for and STILL nothing! Empower you have to do better cause as I see your company is absolutely unsatisfactory from all the reviews!

      This company is nothing but a scam. They take your money every week and if you have an emergency and need to take a hardship loan out they make it near impossible to do. They ask for documents that dont even exist, then they will ask for more documents after you get what they need. We have been trying to pull OUR money out because of an emergency and still cant get it. First off youll be on hold for HOURS at a time EVERY time. Then you will speak with a different person every time that has no clue about your case. Theyre DEFINITELY, with out a doubt trying to make this as hard of a process as possible so youll give up. Absolutely a scam! DO NOT INVEST IN THE CROOKS.

      I called several times to initiate a hardship withdrawal and they put you on a forever hold and that department never picks up the call. I feel they dont want to let me have my money.

      Attempted to rollover funds out of Empower to a new employers 401(k) provider, and its been a total nightmare. They sent an initial check but they misspelled the recipient, so *** requested a new check. Ive called back 3x since then and they still havent sent the new check. Its been nearly a month and I have yet to receive the check which I will still have to send to the new provider. Disaster and disorganization all over this place.

      I had over $800 in my 401k with Empower through my employer and I had a separation of employment. I am STILL trying to get my money from them and its been over 2 weeks! They charge you half of what you have for the *** and for their withdrawal fees, then its a nightmare to get the money sent to you! I moved so to change your address, it puts your entire account on hold for TWO WEEKS! Then, to get a check mailed costs an extra $40 and that takes another two weeks. I put a bank account so that I could direct deposit it and it takes 15 days for your bank account to be approved!!! Then another 10 days after that for the money to be deposited!! Were talking a month for me to get MY hard earned money from this scam of a company!!! What if I had an actual emergency and needed to withdraw that money right away?!! What an awful awful company! I am now removing my money from my other employers 401k so that I do not have to go through this again!!! This company should be put out of business, but with the amount they took from me, theyll probably be in business quite some time!!!!

      Where Do I Even Start?!!!! I applied for a Hardship for school that took a week to get approved, because of all the information I was not told, the constant back and forth between customer reps, in which they sent me in a complete circle, and the nail in the coffin, me waiting on a Supervisor to get off of break and missing the time deadline to even send my hardship out. Story Breakdown: I gathered EVERYTHING REQUIRED ON THE *********** my documents in via efax on Sunday, 7/2/23. On Monday, I received a text at 5:45 am saying my docs were in review. I hear nothing all day. The next day is a holiday, so nothing as well. Heres where the foolery starts. On Wed. I receive a text saying additional info is needed. I call in, and the rep says my documents dont fit what is being required. Once on the phone, I bring her attention to the list that THEY attached to the form, and go down it explaining everything that is there, and whats what. She notates it. The next day, I get the same text, this time, they dont want an electronic signature, they want a physical signature. In the course of the week, I will leave work twice to go physically sign and fax these papers back, when I could have used a ************* and it would have been okay. I am not told that until Thursday night right before they close. Keep in mind, Im having to call them anywhere from 4-5 times a day. Each time, a customer rep. tells me they have everything they need, and Im good on my end. Only to receive an "additional paperwork" text the next day. I get so tired of being bounced back and forth, I have a literal break down. I eventually talk to a rep who tells me Im approved, but now I need a new date on the forms. Resend Again! Once this is done, I refuse to get off the phone with a rep until my status changes. They approve my hardship but say my account is rejecting it. A Sup. on break makes me miss my time deadline for sending it out and pushes me back 5 days. Guess who got dropped from school today?

      I was consolidating all my 401k accounts from previous employers and requesting withdrawals. Out of all the institutions (close to 10), Empower charged the most ($175); wanted me to schedule a call to talk to someone about things I already knew before I could roll over the funds; and took the longest time. I needed to call multiple times to follow up yet no one seemed to have the right information or get me to talk to the right person. All in all it's a frustrating process for a simple rollover request.

      They told me that I could take out a personal loan. From my retirement. But I had to wait 10 days for approval from work. I called 10 days later to check on the status and they canceled my loan. And didn't even inform me on the reason. So now I have to wait all over again. Just to get a loan with my money that I invested.
