In October 2023, BBB contacted Fair County Awning Co. regarding claims in its advertising.
Its website states "Explore what’s possible with our decorative, eco-friendly awnings," "Add true value to your home with an awning that is environmentally safe, reduces energy consumption, and protects your skin from the harmful rays," and "Why not be green, protect your skin from the sun, and reduce energy consumption." According to the BBB Code of Advertising, claims relating to performance, energy savings, safety, efficacy or results for a product or service should be based on recent and competent testing or other objective data. Advertisers should not make broad, unqualified general environmental benefit claims like eco-friendly. General claims must be qualified with specific environmental benefits and the benefit(s) should be significant. Advertisers must possess competent and reliable evidence (often scientific evidence) to support all environmental benefit claims. Qualifications for any claim must be clear, conspicuous and understandable. BBB requested that the business provide substantiation for its claims and qualify its environmental benefit claims but did not receive a reply.
The claims "We guarantee all of our work, because we know how important it is to your success" and "Get made in the shade with guaranteed awning services" also appear on its website. When using the term guarantee, the advertiser must clearly and conspicuously include a statement that the complete details can be seen prior to sale. These details must disclose any material limitations on the guarantee. The business did not respond to BBB's request that it add the terms of its guarantee to its advertising.
