48 Hour Film Project is basically a scam. It’s first coke first serve and anyone with a phone can enter if they pay the high entry fee. You just watch your own movie in a theater or online along with the other “film makers”. There’s really no prize except a pat on the back for whatever film they decide wins. It’s rumored that many entrants film and edit the majority of their short films before the start time and there’s no way to know who has. Reputable film contests and festivals charge much less or none at all. They also claim on their website to be the largest film making competition in the world and they also claim to have had 50,000 filmmakers since 2001. They claim over 70,000 films since 2001 which would mean over 3,000 films a year but the submission cap is much smaller than that. Also, where are these 70,000 films? There’s nowhere on their website where you can watch them.

I been involved with this competition for close seven years.
The only benefit is that it helps people network and inspires people to challenge themselves.
There’s definitely issues with double standards like teams getting unjustly disqualified and some teams who should be disqualified winning. For example, when I did the Singapore competition, they counted my opening credits as a link to the film and then said I went over, And the team that did win for best picture did exact same thing but we’re not disqualified.
Also they pick and choose who pays the entrance fee and who does not. It does come down to the city producer and their personal favoritism.
As a participant, there’s been many good city producers. However there are city producers that are very vindictive, you say one thing criticizing them they will hate you for life and consider you a basher to a point where you can’t come back because they will always treat you poorly, they have no problems favoring mediocre quality movies and throwing good films under the bus To protect their Darlings.
The other thing is that city producers can be very ignorant. Sometimes they have brought up peoples races. And some of them just think that they can disrespect people who participate and other city producers will also be defensive to a rude city producer, Versus a filmmaker who is standing up to unprofessionalism.
A majority of the winning films are mediocre. Many of them talk about drinking, feces, The menstrual cycle, farting and feature unfunny comedy. It’s not a sophisticated competition, many of the films look like it’s done it’s Filmmaking high school.
Overall, they charge between $150 to over $200. Even though you get free tickets for making a movie, there are other competitions to charge way less and don’t encourage doing a rush job movie in a weekend. Also they rely heavily on volunteers so one of the problems with that is they may want to keep unprofessional people who shouldn’t be there.
