I rented a car from Advantage Rent a Car in ******* on 7/24/24 and returned it on 7/26/24, as documented on the accompanying receipt. At the rental facility, the agent insisted that I must purchase a collision damage waiver (***) for $49.98 unless I provided the declarations page for my own auto insurance policy for him to evaluate (which I did not have with me, although I did have a valid proof of insurance card). Other customers renting cars at the same time had the same problem. The Advantage agents were telling people that their existing insurance was unacceptable unless they could provide copies of declarations pages, and that they should have read the Advantage website. There was no mistaking their language. They did not recommend or encourage the **** They stated clearly that it was required in order to rent a car.As far as I know, it is illegal for a car rental company to require that customers purchase its *** regardless of the insurance a renter does or does not have or what a company states on its website. It is the first time I have had a company insist that a collision damage waiver is absolutely required despite having rented cars from many different companies in different states over the past several decades. The actual rental agreementwhich Advantage would not provide at the time of rental, saying that it would be emailed to me laterstates that the *** is optional. However, the agent at the facility insisted otherwise. The Advantage agents behaved unethically and deceptively, if not illegally. In my case, I went ahead with the rental because it was late in the day and time was of the essence (I was traveling to visit my very seriously ill father in the hospital). However, I would like to at least document the deceptive and seemingly illegal business practices at Advantage Rent A Car.Initial Complaint

On July 28, 2024 I was yet another victim of them forcing you to purchase additional insurance on a rental car. I rented the car and had my own insurance and was forced to purchase additional insurance for $261. no other rental car company does this and you can always decline coverage. I did some research online and there are pages and pages of people reporting this scam. The policy is not available at their location, they tell you to go to the website. You go to the website and it is not available. You called the number and they tell you its at the location. It is not in the documentation when you rent the car, it is not in the booking information. They do not provide direct numbers to the location ( I was in another town on vacation and can not go back) The call center refuses to send you to a managerInitial Complaint

I secured a rental car with Advantage Rent A Car through hotels.com. I purchased the liability insurance through Hotels.com for $10/day. Upon reaching Advantage Rent A Car to pick up the rental car, I was informed that I HAD to purchase there supplemental liability insurance of $19.99/day and that the insurance I paid for through Hotels.com was not the proper insurance for Florida standards. If I chose not to purchase this insurance I would be unable to rent the vehicle with them. Leaving me stranded at their facility and out the cost of the rental car and insurance I had already paid to Hotels.com. Neither their site or Hotels.com informed me of this "MANDATORY" charge. Upon receiving the rental contract by email, AFTER I had already left the building, I noticed that the contract clearly states that this insurance is an optional product. The agent DID NOT inform me of that and in fact said it was required to rent the car, nor did he let me see the contract at all before I signed. At best this is deceptive practices if not outright fraud from this company. I would like a full refund of my rental car.Initial Complaint

On July 8th 2024 I arrived at Advantage rent a car in ******* to pick up the car I had reserved through expedia. I had my insurance agency send me a Verification of Coverage ahead of time to make sure I would not need additional insurance. While picking up the car the individual responsible for handling the paperwork for the rental would not accept my proof of insurance and stated "It is company policy to protect our vehicles." I asked for clarification and to know if I would be able to rent the vehicle without their "Mandatory" Road Side Assistance fee and Collision Damage Waiver CFAR and was told I would not be able to rent the vehicle without it. When requesting an itemized receipt or breakdown I was refused. Additionally I believe they are participating in unethical business practices through their fueling return program. I noted that when I picked up the vehicle it was at 1/8th fuel tank and not the Full they had marked on their paperwork. I took timestamped photos of the fuel gauge at the time of pick up and return in case there were issues. Upon bringing this up to the car return manager they looked at my photos and hand waived the issue denoting that I brought the vehicle back in full which i did not. I returned the vehicle with slightly more then the 1/8th tank like I received it. This practice seems intentionally designed to catch unaware customers into their FPO or fuel purchase option wich gouges the consumer by not accurately recording the correct fuel level.I have attempted to contact them on multiple occasions through various avenues including calling them at **************, messaging them through their send a message tool on their website contact page, and responding to the emails I have received from them. When calling their phone number there is no way to contact a live representative outside of the roadside assistance option. I have not received any response from my emails or through their send a message tool.Thank you for your time.Initial Complaint

I rented a car with Advantage Rent a Car in ******* ** on June 11, 2024. I paid for the rental, but then I received an additional, fraudulent charge on my credit card from them. I called the company 5 times so far over about a months time trying to get refunded for the fraudulent charge, and all I can get is the call center saying they have escalated my claim and sent an email to the location in ******* and they are waiting to hear back from them, claiming is should only take 3-5 business days. Well, it is now July 19, 2024 and still nothing after persistence on my end.Initial Complaint

On July 17, 2024, my company had pre-ordered a rental car from this location in *************** Advantage rental car. Original invoice was for $******. When I arrive the concierge or rental agent Refused to let me book for the originally breed upon price based on state laws that upon further review after leaving for an accurate, and the travel agent included charges that I specifically asked her to remove. The dishonesty Repeated itself on the phone with other customers, and with the next customer after me. Instead of asking If the customer wants certain upgrades, she demanded, said it was required by state law in *******. She also took a look at my insurance policy at her request as an excuse to deny my right to say no to their liability auto coverage. This was more than sales tactics. It was pure deception. I am not the only one that Has complained about this Im sure. Instead of the original 147, I was forced to pay 380+ the $250 security deposit that was originally promised to be $100. I have included the original invoice for ****** as well as the final price of $380 shown in the invoice. The $300 does not include the $250 security deposit I was forced to pay. I tried to call all numbers listed for this company in order to dispute these charges, and the numbers were either disconnected or rang repeatedly with no one picking up. Included both the original invoice of 147 and the 380 I was charged when it was all set and done despite my demands otherwise. I was given no choice because being from ******** she somehow convinced me that Florida law demands all of these things. She also knew that Expedia will say anything in order to get a client to book but when I try to cancel, she said that it was too late to cancel and that I would be charged. It was pure deceptionInitial Complaint

I had rental car reservation at ***************** on June 20th 2024 to June 25 2024. I have been charged additional $119.94 USD for supplemental liability insurance. I showed my full insurance certification at local branch and was told they did not accept liability insurance from ************************** and I was forced to pay additional $20 per day. I asked if this is state law or company policy, the agent said it is their branch policy. When I asked if she can show, she said she did not have it and asked me to go to their website.I have attached screen shot from their website which indicating liability insurance is necessary if customer does not have insurance proof. However, I showed I have my own insurance approve.I also called their customer service after pick up the car. I was first told I did not need to purchase liability insurance if I have my own, then agent put me on hold and came back said I do need it. When I asked him why there is different answer asking for supervisor and he said he could ask supervisor to call me back the next day. However, I never got any phone call.Initial Complaint

************************************* Fargo Credit Card Dispute Pref # ******** Advantage Car Rental Disputing $152.44 charged on May 9th for additional day (not true, provided photo of vehicle on property the night before time and date stamped) and for a full tank of gas bc they said I received it with a full tank. I received it in between the 1/4 and 1/8th tank. I drive 61 miles. I broke down the mileage of the exact car i had, approx MPG and the possible amount I could have used which was 2 gallons for 61 miles. They claimed that I used 7/8 of a full tank driving only 61 miles. **** plus the taxes equalled an additional $152.44! I submitted proof to my CC company twice. I still have yet to speak with anyone at Advantage. I rented a car for 3 days for $46.99 at 11:30 pm on May 5th-May 8th (5 to 6, 6 to 7, 7 to 8th) Breakdown of $46.99 was the ***** for 3 days. After I landed back in **, I was sent my invoice via email stating $200 was charged in addition to the $46.99! An additional day charge was added claiming I returned the car at 5:30 am. I took pictures of the car in their property before I left, to cover myself for no damages, etc..with time date and location stamped( thank goodness I thought! ) I even had it back an hour early 10:38 pm. I went in to ask this in person, earlier that same day bc i couldn't reach anyone by phone to ask what or if id be charged if I kept the car and took the shuttle from their lot. They informed me it would be over $35 so I made my decision right there! My entire agreement was only $46.99 so I was not willing to pay that for a few hours. approx additional day rate = $37.05 - I have proof of vehicle on property of 10:38pm 13 gallons refueling @ $6.99/gal $90.64 On the agreement it says you will not be credited for additional gas you put in so i put approximately what I thought id used. $6 before i dropped off. I wrote a very detailed explanation that's in the provided photosInitial Complaint

Rental car was picked up on Tuesday, 25 June 2024. At time of pickup the gas gauge read approximately 1/2 of a tank. I was told by an attendant to return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel AND was advised, however, to take a photograph of the fuel gauge before leaving the lot (photo was taken documenting fuel level at time of rental pickup).Car was returned on Thursday, 27 June 2024 with a fuel level of approximately 3/4 of a tank (photo was taken to document the fuel level upon return). Later that day my credit card was charged an additional $32.80 for fuel. This is an illegitimate charge based on fuel level at time of pickup. It appears this is a common practice at this rental facility since the attendant was adamant that I photographically document the fuel level before leaving the lot at time of pickup.
