***************************** is trying to collect a nonexistent debt of unspecified amount from my parents, ****** and ***********************, on behalf of SeaLand Travel (*******************************) for account #********. I am the executor for my dad's estate and attorney in fact for my mom. No debt is owed. My parents chose not to renew their membership years ago, and the account was listed as "expired." I'm attaching a copy of the company's May 10, 2023 email, the company's April 19, 2023 collection letter, my May 8, 2023 response, a 2014 email exchange between them and my father, and a 2015 email exchange between them and my father. After receiving today's (5/10/23) email, I called the person to tell her we would not be paying a nonexistent debt nor renewing. She refused to speak with me about the "debt" and insisted on talking to my parents. I got frustrated and raised my voice, prompting her to hang up.It's my understanding that many other people have complained about their tactics: ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************. They've adjusted their tactics to say they will file a debt forgiveness claim with the ************************ if the person does not pay.Customer Answer

I received a message saying that the company was called Funseekers Inc. That's not the name of the company I typed in. It's *****************************.Business Response

Thank you for the additional information regarding members account. As a good faith gesture after receiving this new information we are cancelling all debt, past, present, and future, that we show is owed by the above consumer and do show that their membership is cancelled.Customer Answer

Complaint: 20042986
I am partially rejecting this response because no debt is owed. Therefore, there is no debt to be cancelled. Accepting a cancelled debt would allow this company to move forward on its threat to report the forgiven debt to the ************************* which would likely require my father's estate and my mother to pay taxes. The final federal tax return has already been filed for *****************************
Please have the company show exactly what debt they consider owed. To date, we have received no particulars - no dates, no services, no amount. ************ chose not to renew the membership many years ago, and the membership was listed as "expired." Simple as that. A business cannot force someone to continue to do business with them. Their own employee's words state that back payment of annual dues is required ONLY if my parents chose to renew the membership, but my parents have no intention of renewing the membership.
Alternatively, the company can acknowledge that no debt was ever actually owed and also promise not to file any claim of forgiven debt with the Internal Revenue Service.
I do accept the cancellation of the membership.
Sincerely,

We just received a letter from FSA trying to collect money they say we owe to Sea Land Travel. We cancelled our membership with Sea Land approximately 10-11 years ago, and Sea Land never contacted us again until May 2022. We requested written information about this alleged debt, but heard nothing more until today. They claim to have provided services such as emails and mailings, but we received no services after the time we cancelled our plan with them, including no emails. Now FSA is threatening to report to the IRS that our debt is taxable. We believe that even if we owed money (which we deny), that collection of that debt is prohibited by North Carolina law after three years of no contact. Please make them leave us alone about this bogus debt and don't let them try to apply consequences to us that are undeserved.Business Response

Member received our weekly newsletters (emails) until 07/07/2017 when they clicked the unsubscribe button in one of our emails, once that is clicked we can no longer send out our weekly newsletters. We continued to call, bill, re-bill, send audit letters, final notices, etc. to no avail. We have made multiple
attempts to contact the member to help them either bring their account up to
date to utilize the services they purchased, bring it up to date to
sell/transfer as their contract states, along as the account is current and we
approve the transfer or to close the account through a Mutual Release. There
has been no response on the members part to resolve the account. These members simply need to contact our office

I am rejecting this response because:Sealand Travel is a scam company and provides no value to us. I requested in writing to them a copy of the contract we signed, but they have not provided it to us. We threw away all of our material from them years ago because we contacted them to cancel our membership, and they failed to tell us that they were not in fact allowing us to cancel. We have never received a bill stating the amount of money they claim we owe them. Any number they tell us on the phone would be highly suspect without backup written proof.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott charged a Dallas-area travel firm and three of its principals with violating the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act (DTPA).
According to court documents filed by the state, Royal Palms Travel Inc. and All Inclusive Excursions falsely promised steep discounts as part of travel club memberships they offered through a “shell” company, Sealand Travel Club. The memberships actually had little or no value. The defendants urged other prospective customers to join Sealand Travel Club, which claimed to provide significant discounts and the lowest prices for travel. The state’s enforcement action reveals those claims were false and thus unlawful, and that Sealand is an unincorporated shell company existing in name only. The defendants routed Sealand memberships they sold customers to a mail drop at a UPS office in Kansas City, Mo. In turn, Travel Services Inc., a Delaware corporation also known as Funseekers Vacations Inc., received the forwarded Sealand memberships at an office in Litchfield, Ill.
Sealand charged its members from $2,000 to $8,000, but customers received little or nothing of value, as they were unable to book travel at lower prices than they could find without the Sealand membership. Thus, prices under the “Sealand” banner were no more discounted than ordinary prices quoted on the Internet.
We will not pay any additional money to a company that is unethical and proven to be cheating customers. I also will not sell or trade my membership to someone else, as that would be cheating another person.
We still ask that Sealand Travel cancel our membership as we requested years ago and wipe out any balance they claim we owe. Despite them saying they sent us emails and mail, we did not receive anything from them for many years and have no interest in using their "services" again.
Sincerely,
**** *******Initial Complaint

I received a letter from this company trying to collect a debt that they claim I owe to Trade Winds Vacations. We sat in on a vacation timeshare back in 2010 and after paying them over $6,000, we learned they were a scam and we received nothing from them. After learning of the scam, we told the customer service person, everything was to be cancelled and we would never use any membership with them again. We never heard anything from the Travel Club again until last year, when we received a letter from the club requesting payment of back dues. Both letters state that they've made multiple attempts via mail, (sending invoices), emails and also phone calls. These statements are false. The first letter we did received from them, I contacted the number on the letter as was given a run around about the fees. I advised I would not pay them anything based on us cancelling back in 2010 and not the timeshare they were associated with was a scam. I advised if they were a legit company they needed to provided documentation and send. We have received nothing till we received this new letter attempting to collect a debt from us. These 2 letter we received are the first we had heard from this company in 14 years! In reading online, there have been multiple complaints against this vacation company and multiple alerts about the Financial Services of America. At this point we want the company to stop contacting us, as we don't owe a debt and have no service with this company in 14 plus years.Business Response

did not purchase membership from us, they purchased from an independent sales

I do not remember the exact date. It was about 2007 or 2010
We signed up and paid up front for the sign up fee but then when it didn't offer us anything we could use, we cancelled this.
We haven't heard from them in years, all of a sudden they are sending threatening letters.
I want nothing to do with them..

Around 18 years ago I joined a vacation discount club called Castaways. They are based out of Litchfield IL. I received a package of coupons and went home to research what I had gotten into. After looking online, I discovered that the coupons can be downloaded from the internet for free. There were reports on the internet that this company is a scam. I called and cancelled my membership and never sent them anymore money. I didn't hear from them for 18 years and now they say I owe back dues and have to pay them. They won't say how much but have turned it over to two different collection agencies. The first to send me letters was Corporate Consulting Services, *** ***** ******* ********** **. Now I received a letter from Financial Services of America with the sane address in Litchfield. This time they threatened to report me to the IRS.Business Response

I telephoned Castaways the next day after I signed up and asked them to cancel my membership. I have never received an invoice nor any communication from them until recently. They still haven't sent me an invoice. As for proof, after 18 yrs. of no communication with this company, written proof would be hard to locate. I want them to stop sending threatening letters. I want a letter stating that my account has been closed and that I do not owe them anything.Business Response

These members will need to show proof of cancellation, documentation is required to close account, upon review of our records there has not been a request to close the account by mail, phone or email. We are here to help the members in resolving this matter. On June 30, 2010, my wife and I purchased a membership with Outrigger (********* ******** **** ** ******** *** It became obvious I could do better with vacation on my own. I called the following Monday to cancel. I was given the runaround and filed a complaint with the MA Attorney General's office. They filed suit against the companies and in March 2015, we received a partial settement. Five years after that, we received a letter from Voyager Vacation Club claiming we owed one year's dues of $249. I ignored it. They kept sending letters and I have called them and they said I had a contract with Voyager and not with their agents. I want them to stop.Business Response

Members purchased the Outrigger Vacation Club product, from the independent Sales and Marketing office 'Funtasia Group' we are not connected with that office, we are simply the fulfillment company, travel provider. We are unaware of any issues, suits, complaints, etc. associated with the sales office. However; as a an act of good faith we have closed/cancelled members account.

In 2005 we went to a seminar about going to Disneyworld, we paid a one-time fee to get low-cost tickets for a once in a lifetime trip. The trip never materialized, the costs were too high, we cancelled the membership. Five years ago, we were contacted by Tradewinds saying we owed for past membership fees. I called and spoke with them, they wanted to negotiate, I knew I didn't owe them. Two years ago, they contacted us again, I called the Maine Attorney General and they told me to contact the Illinois AG. We did. Today I was told by Corporate Consulting Services that my debt is legitimate, and they will pressure us to pay a negotiated settlement. Can you help me get them to leave us alone? I am willing to take direction to get final resolution. Looking forward to hearing from you, Andrew PerryBusiness Response

Member(s) statement of purchasing this in 2005, is a false statement, as members purchased this on 02/10/2010, members may have this confused with something else that was purchased. Corporate Consulting Services, Inc ( Castaways Vacation Club)
*** * ***** ****** *********** ** *****
Castaways Vacation Club has contacted us indicating that we owe them an outstanding balance after auditing our account. We joined this club in the mid 2000's while in Texas. They provided no invoice or detail on what we owe them in these letters and ask us to contact them. We tried unsuccessfully to use their services when living in Texas. It is our recollection that we paid them in full at the time of joining and agreed to pay an additional charge for services if we used them. We did this to avoid any additional membership or maintenance fees. We have had no contact with them until we received their letters in 2022 and 2023. After researching this on the internet we found that Castaways has been trying to collect on old accounts for money that they were not owed and well past the statute of limitations. We ignored the letters until recently when they sent us another indicating that they moved our account to collection via Financial Services of America (FSA). They(FSA) reside at the same address as Corporate Consulting Services in Litchfield. We contacted them on 4/25/23 and spoke to an agent who indicated that we owed them $3498 and that if we resolved the issue today they would wave the separation fee of $900 from the account. We tried to discuss this, the agent became argumentative, would not let us speak and hung up saying they would send us our contract.
We believe there is no debt to begin with. If there was / is they are well past the statute of limitations for debt collection in both Texas and Connecticut where we currently reside.
Please help us resolve this so that the false debt, the threat of debt collection and reporting to the IRS (as they threatened) is eliminated.Business Response

The information Castaways provided is not factually accurate or complete. The contract they sent to us(attached) is not complete as we recall paying an initial membership fee as per a separate document which has not been provided. by them. It appears to us that they have selectively provided contract documents from the agreement. They are missing contract pages and one that they did supply is not complete as it does not contain our signatures. We have no guarantee that this was part of the membership application that we agreed to as it does not contain our initials. I have emails in AOL going back to 2010. At no time did Castaways try to contact us, send us news letters or reach out to us concerning any services, promotion or failure to pay dues. One of the documents provided reflects our willingness to have autopay for dues and a credit card for which they could use. At no time were we ever informed there were issues. We no longer required their services. We were never able to use the services for which we paid for as they were unable to satisfy our travel requirements. The membership was cancelled in our view. There is nothing in any of the documents indicating that a "Mutual Release to close / cancel a membership" was to be provided or received by either party. By virtue of the fact that they stop charging the credit card for annual dues demonstrates that they were in agreement that the membership was cancelled and it was no longer acceptable to charge the credit card;.
Attached you will find the most recent documents that Castaways sent to us that I am referring to.
This request for payment of outstanding dues, for services that were never rendered, needs to be dismissed and no further contact made by the company to us. We consider this membership cancelled for years and had forgotten completely about it until we received the recent letters requesting payment for past dues. We held up our end of the agreement, they did not. The statute of limitations for collecting on outstanding debts is long past in both Texas and Connecticut.

Members contract paperwork we have on file, is a carbon copy meaning the initials simply did not bleed through the packet, members receive the original copy at the time of purchase and should have retained those documents. We have never stopped trying to contact members, we even offered a reduced amount to help settle the account as the attachment shows provided from member. As far as the autopay we did reach out when that card expired in 2007 to get the information updated with no response, member did proceeded to pay dues by mailing in payments, as the contract states if the account is not set up on automatic withdrawal of dues, you are charged a billing fee, auto payment not being set-up on an account doesn't count as a closure.
All correspondence from our company comes from Travel Center as Castaway's is just the product purchased, which is covered in the contract paperwork, as well as all other statements made by member is invalid.

It was confirmed with Castaways via phone call that no payments were required unless their travel services were used approximately 15 years ago. Contrary to the response received from Castaways, no requests for payment or billing notices have been received except for the letter received in April. Castaway's has not confirmed via phone, mail or even email that no payment was required, member(s) contract paperwork covers that statement, as it states the dues are due each year 04/18. I received a letter from this company trying to collect a debt that they claim I owe to Tradewinds Vacations. I did in fact join this club and used its services but I was so dissatisfied with their service that I canceled and never used it again. I did not hear from them for 2 years when I received an email from the club requesting payment of back dues. Their emails indicated they made multiple attempts via mail, emails, and also phone calls. These statements are false. I had heard nothing from them in the 2 years since I canceled my contract on a phone call. I do not owe any back dues.Business Response

out of a debt owed. These members simply need to contact our office to either
pay their fees up to current to use the benefits or to sell/transfer their
membership themselves just as their contract states with our approval of that
sell/transfer or the other option is to contact our office to reach a fair
settlement agreement to properly close/cancel through a Mutual Release document
which breaks the current agreement then having no further cost or obligations.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:
We agree that we did speak to this business on 1/08/2019. We were told that we needed to be up to date with our balance to cancel our contract. That is why we paid them on that date. We paid and verbally cancelled our contract. Then we did not hear from them until 2021. No contact at all until then. That is when we were told we were delinquent in our account. We feel this dispute is over as we verbally cancelled our contract in 2019 and didn't hear from them until 2021.
Sincerely,

Members were fully aware that the payment made on 01/08/2019 was for their yearly dues as they authorized the charge for dues and they received a receipt through their email and the receipt shows DUES PAYMENT 1 Year Renewal- Valid Thru 03/15/2020, they can simply check this by going into their email and viewing the receipt that was sent at 1:22pm PST. In order to close the account member must complete a Mutual Release Agreement, which has not been completed. In 2020 we sent a billing statement out on 02/21/2020, 04/14/2020, 09/08/2020 along with the weekly emails we send every Tuesday, member failed to respond until 2021. Members stating they have not heard from us until 2021 is false as they have received bills, emails, and re-bills.
Again, members have not requested to cancel but claimed so in an effort to try and
get out of a debt owed. These members simply need to contact our office to
either pay their fees up to current to use the benefits or to sell/transfer
their membership themselves just as their contract states with our approval of

I am rejecting this response because:
I was told on 1/08/2019 that my contract would cancel. I was not fully aware of anything, as this business writes, as I trusted in what I was being told on the telephone. I did not know I had to have a mutual release agreement. I did receive a receipt, as stated, but in my mind, my contract was cancelled, since that is what I was told. I received no emails on 02/21/2020, 04/14/2020, 09/08/2020 along with the
weekly emails supposededly sent every Tuesday. I didn't recieve any contact because my contract was cancelled. I was not contacted until 2021 until they told me I needed to once again, update my policy so I could cancel it.
Sincerely,

Member(s) claiming they were told the account was closed in 2019, is a false statement, they willing paid their annual fees, they did not request to close the account the email on file will have (*******************) received a receipt from Travel Services Department, they also signed an authorization form authorizing the charge through their website access information for a one time payment for their dues not a Mutual Release, we send documentation authorizing the charges of which member(s) are either paying annual fees or completing a Mutual Release.
Member continues to make false claims on account trying to get out of a debt owing, when in fact member did not request to close and has not completed the proper documentation to close.
Again, these members simply need to contact our office to either pay their fees up to current to use the benefits or to sell/transfer their membership themselves just as their contract states with our approval of that sell/transfer or the other
option is to contact our office to reach a fair settlement agreement to properly close/cancel through a Mutual Release document which breaks the current agreement then having no further cost or obligations.
