In April 2024, I sought financial assistance and was offered a loan by Atlas Personal Finance for $2,900. From the beginning, their website was difficult to navigate, and important details of the loan, such as the interest rate and repayment terms, were unclear until the final step. It wasn’t until after I had nearly completed the process that I realized the loan carried an APR of 168.5347%, which is illegal in my state.
The finance charges total over $7,000, resulting in a repayment amount of almost $10,000—more than triple what I borrowed. This information was hidden in a way that made it nearly impossible to understand until it was too late. I was in a vulnerable financial position, and Atlas clearly took advantage by misleading me into terms I never would have accepted if they had been disclosed upfront.
Since then, I have made over $1,000 in payments, but the loan’s predatory nature has caused me significant financial stress. I’ve tried to contact them to discuss this, but their customer service has been dismissive, offering no resolution. They continue to aggressively pursue more payments under these predatory terms.
This entire experience has been extremely stressful. Not only am I dealing with the financial burden of this unfair loan, but the lack of transparency and difficulty in communicating with Atlas has made the situation worse. Their deceptive practices and refusal to work with me have caused a great deal of emotional strain.
I am asking for the following:
Immediate cessation of all collection activities.
A fair resolution to reflect the illegal and deceptive nature of the loan.
Confirmation that no further negative impact will be reported on my credit due to this predatory loan.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:The business has not reached out and it’s already a problem communicating with them. Their website isn’t helpful, they send automated emails that have broken links.
I am worried that their need to take this directly will result in no resolution.

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to address a concerning issue with my loan account. Upon reviewing my account details, I noticed that the reported interest rate on my loan is 198.0324%, which appears to be significantly higher than legal limits.
As per the Predatory Loan Prevention Act (PLPA) in Illinois, the maximum permissible interest rate on consumer loans is 36% APR. It appears that the interest rate associated with my loan exceeds this legal threshold.
I kindly request that you review my loan terms and adjust the interest rate to comply with Illinois state regulations. I would appreciate a prompt response to resolve this matter and ensure that my account reflects the correct and legal interest rate.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue. I look forward to your prompt resolution.Business Response

In October 2023 I took an emergency loan out of $2000 to pay for a last-minute unexpected expense. Since taking the loan out I have payed well over $4000 in bi-weekly payments of $193 and my payoff is somehow over $2000. Making my interest well over 200% which is well over the maximum of Washington state. I have recently lost my job and can not continue to go into more debt to pay this absurd loan. I believe my current total payment of $4000 is more than enough to settle this loan.Business Response

I took out a loan with Atlas. I have been making payments for several months and I went to my account to look at what I owe and I still owe the entire amount that was loaned to me. I then noticed that the internet rate on my loan is 349.2616%. That is not legal. I would like to request that my loan is considered paid off by Atlas and my account be closed.Business Response

I am disputing a "missed" payment ) I am setup for autopay and so is my wife on her account- it is for the same amount, same day, same checking acct. The bank rejected payment thinking it was a duplicate request because my wifes came out but not mine. Atlas is saying they are going to report this is a missed payment which I do NOT agree with, this is NOT my fault, this clearly is an issue with thinking a duplicate error from atlas and my bank, not due to me not having funds. This is NOT my fault and I do not agree with this and I am being told I can no longer go back to the agreement I had which I don't agree with either, I need a supervisor to fix this i am very UPSET!Business Response

Was curious about the negative things I’ve heard from a friend that took out a loan from this “rent-a-bank”. I took out a loan with the intention of immediately paying it back, but after seeing the interest rate of almost 500% buried in pages of documents, I decided to see if they would respond and do the “right” thing.
My home state of Illinois caps interest at 36% for businesses that are licensed within the state - 9% for unlicensed businesses. Crooks like this “bank” will pose themselves as a financial institution to skirt state laws. I want to see if they will honor my states interest cap before I send the information to the State AG’s office. I’d really love them to simply stay out of my state.
It’s also impossible to get in touch with them, so don’t expect to plea your case. I fully expect no response.Business Response
