I have rented from Storagemax LLC at **** **** ****** *** ******* NC since April 2022. They have put our two units up for auction that ends 1/16/2023. We missed Nov and Dec payments and within 45 days the auction notice was sent. We found out about the auction at the end of December and unable to come up with any money to satisfy the lien. Storagemax kept us from our two units July, Aug and most of September due to a now estranged friend who had used my acct to store her stuff in an additional two units with the knowledge of the manager as belonging to her. This other woman had not paid for her units and we had paid for our two units. Storagemax insisted we pay for her units in order to access ours. They gave her several weeks to remove her items even though she never took ownership of the units while keeping us on a chaperone only during business hours access to our units though we were 100% paid. Now that we have ended up homeless while waiting on government assistance from the **** program and every item we own is in these units, they refuse to negotiate any type of agreement that we can afford or extend the auction to a reasonable date. They locked our units after 5 day late payment and filed for a lien 45 days later. They have been unwilling to work out a payment arrangement. I have been critically ill and hospitalized, homeless and my main source of income is held in one of the storage units (items I sell online that I have been unable to sell despite buyers requesting the items). Storagemax is well aware of this. Despite being homeless and without income, they have refused us even access to obtain proper shoes and jackets in the cold weather since the last time we accessed them it was during warm weather. We have been forced to dig in garbage dumpsters to keep warm with found clothing and blankets. Even though laws in NC allow them to file early they had twice the time to allow us to resolve this issue.

I’d utilized storagemax after moving in July 2021, keeping some furniture, clothing, and household items in the unit. In March 2021 I was made aware that the payment method on file has expired and bedded to be updated. I did so and asked for that card to be used going forward. I paid 2 late fees due to the expired card. I had continued to incur late fees each month going forward and had to call in to ask staff to use the card on file. Was told staff member in March was no longer there and lots of staff turnover and card would auto draft going forward. This did not occur. June 17 or so I gave move out notice since 10 days was required. Belongings were moved out by a donation company june 30 and I left a message notifying storagemax that unit had been cleared. I was strategically emailed July 6 (a day after their 5 day “rent is due deadline” that i was charged $160 rent for July because there was a box spring and a blanket left in the unit. I reached out to the donation center who explained they could not take the box spring due to a leak from the roof that damaged it. I returned to move the box spring with a friend July 7 or 8. I requested a refund of $160 for July rent and 2 late fees credited as well for $24 each. I was told by area manager that this request was declined. I disagree because I gave proper notice, could only not have 1 item cleared due to damage caused by a leaking unit, I did not ask to claim damage on the damaged box spring, and mysteriously my card was charged for July after I had to call in the 4 previous months and incur late fees because the card on file was not charged. This is as poor business ethics as I have seen and I do not want this company to have $208 of mine they should not have. I have also disputed the charge with my bank since I did not authorize it and was just told rent for July was charged. I look forward to receiving the refund that’s rightfully due.
