**** said it would be 8-10 sheets plywood at $68 plus 2x4s screws and anything else needed $1100. Ladder $300 and Labor $600 if we paid cash. If no it would be $2200. We agreed to pay cash.We gave him a deposit ($500) for the ladder/attic project and agreed to pay for the bathroom project ($125) when the rest of the job was *********** seemed to take a lot longer to finish the work than anticipated. **** seemed to be getting irritable and frustrated.**** messaged at 4:53pm which said were done. Were ******* our regret we paid him the balance of $1625 and he said if we have any concerns or questions we should feel free to call him. No talk about coming back to finish an incomplete job. No talk of scheduling another visit. The following afternoon I installed the adjusting anchor on the ladder and climbed up. Thats when I saw that the job was not even close to complete and what was done was poorly done. At 2:45pm I called **** and the call went directly to voicemail. I left a message then immediately followed up with a text message that I needed to get a call back from him.I called several times a day trying to contact him to get some idea of what had happened and to get some kind of resolution. On 1/27 I called him again and received a call back. He told me he had been very sick after doing our attic and apologized for the delay and that he will come right out at our earliest convenience. I couldnt commit to a day at that time due to my work schedule and that I would call him back on 2/3 when I knew my schedule. I called him and let him know I was available 2/6-2/9. He said he could come out on 2/8.**** showed up the morning of 2/8 with the same helper as before but only brought a couple sheets of plywood. And not the same size as before. He was using on the original install but brought for the rest of the job. **** did not seem interested in doing a good job or finishing the job at this point. He left angry.Business Response

The scope of work was to install an attic ladder and to put plywood down so they could have a place to store things in their attic. There was nothing written, no bid, no estimate. It was all verbal. They called me to do a drywall patch in their bathroom because they had a leak and **** (the customer tried to patch it his self and messed it up). I went and did the drywall patch and, on the way out when finished his wife asked if I wanted another job. I said sure and that's when she showed me the garage and says " we want a ladder installed in the ceiling of garage and plywood laid down in attic to be able to store things up there" I gave them a verbal estimate of ******** cash or ******** check. They agreed and gave me a deposit of ******. I came back the fallowing day and performed the work. I showed up with only 4 sheets of plywood and the attic ladder and told them I would have to return to ********** for more plywood once we installed what we had there, and it was because I couldn't fit anymore in my van. They said OKAY and we began the work. It took longer than expected because they had a work bench in the way of where the ladder came down, so it was difficult to access the attic once installed. we had to climb on the bench with whatever we were taking up and then climb on ladder to go up to the attic. There were trusses up there so we had to make multiple cuts to get plywood up there through the opening and to be able to fit it in-between the trusses and also they already had a bunch of boxes and stuff up there so we had to move it all to one side to lay down plywood and then move it back to other side to lay down plywood on other side. Regardless, we installed what wood we had, and I told them we were done for the day and to call me when they moved the work bench, and we would come back to finish the floor up in the attic. I got sick the fallowing day and was out for a couple days. When I was feeling better, I returned ****** call and set up date to return to finish the work. When we got there **** tells me before we go inside that his wife was ****** off at me because she had a contractor friend come over and tell her I ripped her off and that he would have done the work in half the time for half the amount I charged. I said I'm sorry, but I hear that all the time and we had made an agreement already. About 5 minutes later his wife comes up in the ***** where I was working and began cussing me out, being super vulgar and belittling the heck out of us saying that my work was s*** and she could had done it better. I asked what she thought the job was worth multiple times (because I was going to credit the difference for her to make her happy) but she wouldn't give me an answer. After about 15 minutes of her yelling at us and kicking wood around saying that "she didn't want mosaics" and telling me she could had done better herself, I told my helper to load up the tools and materials and we were done there. She didn't want to let us out the garage, **** had to yell at her to open it and let us leave. I told **** I would contact him in a few days once everything blew over. The screenshots of our text in the fallowing days are attached.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: The reply from **** has several untrue, partially true, incomplete or misleading statements. Most notably are:
1. I gave them a verbal estimate of ******** cash or ******** check.
Incomplete. He did give an estimate of $2000 or $2200. He left out the part where verbally broke it down concerning the cost of ****, Ladder and Labor.
2. They had a work bench in the way of where the ladder came down.
Incomplete. There was a work bench there that we were in process of moving so it wasnt in the way. I say in the process, because **** didnt show up the day he agreed upon without any communication until later that day. We moved majority of the items away from the working area; but had to stop due to no show. When he arrived, he told us to stop moving stuff and thats what were here for. If this was an issue, he could have brought it up anytime as we were home for the whole day. It would take 20 minutes to move the bench. Instead he decided to work around it. He then said he would tarp the garage so the dust wouldnt get all over everything. He didnt move the bench nor did he tarp the garage. We are still cleaning dust off items. There was also some damaged audio equipment we realized after they left.
3. They already had a bunch of boxes and stuff up there so we had to move it all to one side to lay down plywood and then move it back to other side to lay down plywood on other side.
Incomplete. There were boxes. Approximately 12 that weighed no more than 15lbs each. We told him we are moving them. He again replied that is what they do.
4. I told them we were done for the day and to call me when they moved the work bench, and we would come back to finish the floor up in the attic.
Partially true but misleading. He messaged me with were done. And there was no mention of him returning nor was there any statement regarding moving the bench. When the ladder didnt touch the ground I told him I would install the feet parts and be moving the bench to make access easier for us.
5. **** tells me before we go inside that his wife was ****** off at me because she had a contractor friend come over and tell her I ripped her off.
Incomplete. I told him she was ****** off because he didnt complete the floor and what he had done was not good work and not what was expected. The friend didnt say he ripped her off. He said he could have done it in way less time and for less money. The reason the contractor was invited, to estimate the potential damage to the roof truss that was cut off during the ladder installation.
As mentioned in Chads reply concerning our contractor friend saying he could have done it in less time for less money, **** stated in his narrative that I hear that all the time. I believe him.
6. About 5 minutes later his wife comes up in the attic where I was working and began cussing me out, being super vulgar and belittling the heck out of us saying that my work was s*** and she could had done it better.
Misleading. She was mad. Justifiably so. Heated words came from both sides and language was colorful on both sides. Vulgar? No. (Side note: We finished the job ourselves the next week. And we did a way better job)
7. She didn't want to let us out the garage, **** had to yell at her to open it and let us leave.
Untrue. He said he was leaving and she said wasnt done talking about it and said she would open the door when we get to an agreement on when he will be making the situation right (**** had not yet committed to a fair arrangement to reimburse us for the terrible job he had not completed. Which included the bathroom walls, ladder installation and laying the plywood floor). I did not yell at her. She was the one who opened the garage door to let them out after **** made the statement if she was a man Id punch him in the face. That was when she realized there would be no resolution with ****.
As I stated, we finished the floor in the attic ourselves. And in so doing we uncovered the mess he made out of the truss. I called a couple of different contractors over the next week to their expertise on the damage. We had 3 individuals out to assess. They all had a good grasp on what will be needed to repair the truss. I am including a follow-up text message I got from the company we will be using going forward:
****, so to follow up on my visit, your manufactured truss has been cut and needs repair. The only way to properly repair it is with a stamped engineered drawing from from the truss company that built the trusses or a licensed engineer. At some point you will need that work done and I am more than happy to look at it then. I will forward some engineer information to you if that will help. Make sure you document everything. Thanks!
Clearly we are not satisfied with Chads response. Our insurance companies are now involved
**** and ****
Sincerely,
**** *****
