BBB promotes truth in advertising by contacting advertisers whose claims conflict with the BBB Code of Advertising. These claims may come to our attention from our internal review of advertising, consumer complaints and competitor challenges. BBB asks advertisers to prove their claims, change ads to make offers more clear to consumers, and remove misleading or deceptive statements.
On August 29, 2023, BBB contacted the business regarding its claim that its carpet cleaning process "removes an average of 98% of common household allergens from carpets and upholstery and 89% of airborne bacteria in your home when a sanitizer is added"; "P.U.R.T. removes 99.9% of pet urine odors" and other claims appearing in online advertising.
The BBB Code of Advertising requires advertisers to be prepared to substantiate such claims through independent scientific testing. Harris Research, Chem Dry failed to respond to BBB, therefore they did not substantiate, modify or discontinue the claims.
