My husband and I went to the rancho market store to get some groceries. When we were entering there was a large security man at the door who did not let my husband in. He demanded to know whether his service dog was a service dog, what it was for, and if he had a license. My husband told him that it was a service dog. But the man said that we could not enter because we didn't have a license. It is illegal in the state of Utah to ask what the service dog is for, what disability or accommodation it's for, or to ask for certification.
I asked to speak to the manager, and she informed me that they honestly hadn't had any sort of training on what to do about service animals. That they just didn't want service animals near the restaurant part of their establishment. I told her I understood, but that we weren't going to the restaurant establishment. We were just going to get groceries. I also informed her that they are not supposed to ask about what the dog is for, or for certification. She said she understood, but reiterated that they didn't have any sort of training on how to deal with service animals. She also mentioned that the security man worked for a third party company, and not for their store. That man's name was Pàle. The manager I spoke with is named Yazra.
The security man was very hostile and kept talking over me and getting uncomfortably close to me. Finally I had to tell the manager that I couldn't continue speaking comfortably if he was still there arguing. She was able to send him away. She said that next time we can be allowed in, but I don't know what kind of guarantee that is. I don't want to be shopping and then some security man kicks my husband out again. Since there was no resolution I am sending this complaint.
