I hired Tom *****s from Lewis Commercial Construction to resurface my deck and replace the steps/railings. He was married to a friend of my son.
When it came time to work on the railings, Tom didn't have a miter saw. I offered him mine, but he said he preferred to hand cut the joints.
Tom finished up in the rain and left before I had a chance to inspect the finished product. When I went out to look at the deck, I was severely disappointed. The surface of the deck was fine, but the workmanship on the railings was unbelievably poor. Specific problems included:
    * Hand rails leading from the deck to the yard were dangerously loose, with wide gaps in the miter joints. (One of the hand rails actually broke off 10 days after Tom left the job.)
    * Joints where the deck rail intersected the stair rails. should have been flush, but the angles weren't cut correctly and they didn't align properly. Some of the boards had been badly split by the nails, which left the rail ends loose and splintered.
    * Deck rails should have ended at the posts closest to the house. Instead, they were jammed against the house on one side of the deck and ended at random intervals between the post and the siding.
    * Edges of the stair rails were cut crooked and left jagged. I ended up cutting my arm badly on one of these.
    * Instead of leveling the steps properly on bricks or blocks, Tom wedged scraps of composite decking material under the bottoms of the stringers trying to even out the stairs.
I tried to contact Tom several times to resolve the issues with the deck. He never answered or returned my calls. I even sent him a video of the problems. Weeks later I called a second number on the business card he had given me, his wife answered and said she would have him call me. Within minutes he called shouting "do not call my wife ever again and he was not going to do anything about the deck.
In the end, I had to hire another contractor at further expense to correct Tom's shoddy workmanship.
