On Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024, I attempted enter the East Barre Antique Mall with my wife, sister, and brother-in-law to pursue their wares and purchase items of interest. We were met in the entryway of the business by the owner who stated that he would not allow me to enter with my certified service dog. You see, I'm a combat injured veteran who retired from the Army in 2013 with more than 20 years of active duty service. My service animal is a psychiatric service animal to help me with my severe PTSD from multiple combat tours to **** and ***********. In violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the owner barred me from entering his establishment, a business open to the public and not a private club, and he demanded to see my papers proving my dog was a service animal. Though not required to show him any paperwork or identification according to the **** I provided him two forms of identification identifying me as a certified dog handler and Duchess, my service dog, as a certified service animal. ******* was also wearing her service dog vest which had a patch on it from my certifying agency, K9s For Warriors out of *********************, *******. Even with all this proof, he would not let me enter his business. He insulted me by saying, "You dog people feel so entitled." I calmly tried to explain to him how he was violating the **** but he would not listen. I told him what he was asking was like asking a person with a hearing aid or prosthetic leg that they could not enter while wearing them, but he argued with the analogy. He ushered our party out of his store, insulting us as we left. I would like an apology from the owner.
