    I was won a storage unit through an auction site at Lyons Storage in *******. After I paid for the unit, two separate employees told me the person renting the unit, who was shot and killed directly in front of the storage unit, had been allowed to live there for several years, they knew he had been using drugs in the unit, and they knew that the unit was filled with property that he had stolen. They decided to sell the unit anyway, even though they knew the contents had been stolen, and that there were needles, drugs, and weapons inside.

    No employee at this facility ever told you that anyone has ever been allowed to live on site ever; this has never happened, and we will continue to do our best to ensure that it never does happen. The security and safety of our tenants and staff is paramount and we believe that overnight guests could jeopardize this which is why such behavior is clearly forbidden in our lease agreement. All tenants must demonstrate an understanding that the storage space shall not be used for residential purposes; shall not be used for any unlawful activities; and only for the storage of property wholly owned by Occupant. Regardless of any concerns our staff or law enforcement may have had about the referenced tenants behavior, the bottom line is that this unit was cleared by several law enforcement agencies prior to its auction listing. As stated in our lease, our facility exercises neither care, custody nor control over Occupants stored property. No one at our facility has any evidence the unit in question contained needles, drugs, or weapons; any such concerns would have been addressed directly through the applicable law enforcement agency. The tenants lease falls under the purview of RCW 19.150.060 which allows that all the property, other than personal papers and personal photographs, may be sold to satisfy the lien; we feel that it can be unfair to forfeit the possibility of reducing our tenants debt owed by circumventing the sale of their contents. We believe, in alignment with our legal counsel, that utilizing the auction process to help offset the costs to our lesee was the ethical decision regarding the unit in reference.
