Government Actions
CFPB vs The Mortgage Law Group, LLP, Consumer First Legal Group, LLC, Thomas G. Macey, Jeffrey J. Aleman, Jason Searns, and Harold E. Stafford
The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced that it had resolved an appeal in an enforcement suit filed against two companies and four individual attorneys, including Harold E. Stafford, for charging “illegal advance fees to financially-distressed homeowners for legal representation the defendants promised but did not provide.”
According to the CFPB, the case “was part of a coordinated effort against various foreclosure relief scam operations by the CFPB, Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and 15 states in 2014.”
The CFPB won a judgment against Mr. Stafford and the other defendants in November 2019. The judgment was subsequently modified in August 2022. The case was ongoing for several years and involved multiple appeals. The final appeals were dismissed on February 7, 2024, after the appealing parties reached a settlement.
