  We hired McLean Contracting to install a railing on a wheelchair ramp at a library. We received an estimate for the railing in its entirety. We past said quote on to owner, at which time the quote was approved and the work was to commence. We paid McLean Contracting for their services. The building inspector came and inspected the ramp and railing only to find that the railing in fact did not pass code in a few locations. We reached out to McLean Contracting at which point we were told there would be extra costs to bring up to code. We feel that this is the sole responsibility of McLean Contracting to ensure their installs are to code.

  On November 23rd, 2022 we were sent an email from the client to have railings installed on a deck & ramp (email ********). Our field estimator met with the client on site to discuss the railings and what the client would like us to install. No site specific drawings were provide to us.
  

  An estimate was sent to the client based on the site discussion which he approved. The railings were installed on December 13th, 2022 and all meet Alberta Building Code graspability requirements.

  Client has requested the following be added from what he said the inspector has requested:

  1. Pipe handrail added to the landing (not required per building code)

  2. Jughandles added to bottom posts (not required per building code)
  

  We have offered to have these items installed for the client and sent him a quote but they would be an extra cost which the client is refusing to pay for. If the client asked us on site to have these added or provided us plans that showed them, we would have included them in the quote but these were never discussed.

  If these items were not included on the plans, then they are not required to be installed. This would only then be a site specific extra request by the inspector based on their interpretation of the code which the client can appeal.

  We are willing to correct this issue with the client but they would have to pay for the service as ************ are compliant with building codes. I have requested the plans, inspection report, and any relevant information from the client for me to investigate this matter further.
