I rented a campervan from Karma Campervans (CONTRACT NO: ****) September 13th-24th, 2023. On September 28th, they reached out to confirm the vehicle had been received (4 days after returning it), and mentioned there was new paint damage on the underside of the van. We were completely unaware of any damage until it was brought to our attention, and even checked back to our photos pre-trip and post-trip, which made it difficult to decipher whether there was paint or just dirt on the car. Upon their notification, we took the matter seriously and, being unsure of the cause, initiated our own investigation. Given my background working in public service (***************), I decided to reach out to both ** ************** and ******* ************** to inquire about any roadwork or maintenance activities that could have impacted the vehicle during our trip. They confirmed that highway line paintings had been completed in the Okanagan-Kootenay boundary during the duration of our travel. However, they also noted that any claim or action regarding damage caused by such activities would need to be pursued by the vehicle owner, Karma Campervans, and not by the renter. The "damage", if even caused by us, was beyond our control. We had no choice but to drive on the roads (they are a vehicle rental company after all), and it was impossible for us to foresee any road work when no signage was visible, and on certain highways, challenging to discern the lane markings due to the one-lane configuration. They refused to submit a claim and instead billed us for $1812.42 in "damages", which they say resulted in a full replacement of the wheel liner, front fender flare, rear fender flare, front rocker molding, sliding door rocker molding. The images they sent were not time stamped and no images were given post-repair. I also contacted various nearby automotive companies who confirmed that the paint could have been removed with the right product and a power washer for less than 20% of the cost.
