Approximately two weeks ago, Century Plumbing violated the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) of Alberta by releasing my private information to an individual.

An individual, ****** ********, called Century Plumbing to find out information about my condo. ****** does not own or live in this unit and has no right to my personal information.

Not only did Century Plumbing give out information about my condo regarding work that needs to be done, they also gave/confirmed my address with this woman. Aside from this being illegal, it is also extremely dangerous. For a company to be giving out individuals' addresses to complete strangers puts those individuals at risk and it is also highly unethical.

Century Plumbing claims that ****** already knew about the work that needed to be done and knew my address, so they are arguing that they have done nothing wrong. Regardless of what this woman did or did not know (why would I tell a woman trying to buy my condo about work that needs to be done?), Century should have instructed her they were not at liberty to release this information (both required work and my address). I also question the ethics of saying that someone claims to know your address and therefore it is okay for a company to confirm it.

As a result of this, I had to spend over $1,200 in order to try to sell my condo, and had a significant loss on the sale price. Century Plumbing invaded my privacy, cost me money, and ultimately broke the law.

    Hello ******,

As per our phone calls regarding this situation. Your information was not released to another occupant of the building. There was a occupant in your building that was interested in purchasing your unit to which you were aware of. As this occupant is already living in the same building she was aware of your unit number, address and the plumbing and heating work being conducted in the building.

The prospective buyer requested a service call for an inspection of an a/c unit as she was already aware that work needed to be done and wanted a report for herself. She informed us that this was already communicated and scheduled with you and the realtor.

Later that day, the call was canceled and the inspection was not completed.

After you informed us of your concerns and we had a lengthy conversation regarding the timeline and details involved, you requested further work to be done in your unit to which we complied.

I am very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with how our service was conducted. We do take our customer's privacy and the laws of service very seriously and treat them with the utmost respect. With this, after we have accessed the details regarding your service call, your privacy was contained and the law was not breached.

We do wish you all the best with your future endeavours.

    Warmest Regards,
    Management
