I had been a client of the *** ******* branch since 1997 . I had been using another bank but decided to keep the account open and put small amounts of money in every 2 weeks or so .

I had gotten letters to go in and put some money in the account recently to keep it from going dormant . I had about $60 in the account when it was suddenly closed and my money eaten up in fees . I would like my money replaced and my account reopened

      To Whom it May Concern,

Thank you for escalating this matter to our attention. Our investigation to this matter has concluded to find that the Complaint Details received aren't a true representation of what has actually taken place. Inactive and Dormant account procedures are set to mitigate risk for our members and were adhered to in this instance.

Further, the funds that the Complainant are referring to as their own, is not an accurate statement as outlined in our review. In November of 2022, the membership had: Equity shares of $5.00, Surplus equity shares of $35.47, a chequing account that had a negative balance of $56.50 as well as a savings with a negative balance of $5.41.

In the months following, December 2022, January 2023, February 2023, & March 2023, there was a pre-authorized payment debited for $8.50 that could not go through due to insufficient funds, however we did not charge a NSF of $48.00 for any of these debits. A $5.00 overdraft fee was charged each of those months as well as interest and a $4.00 monthly service fee on the chequing account.

By February 2023 the chequing account was negative $94.50, and the savings was negative $5.41. In February 2023, the Surplus equity shares were transferred to cover some of the overdrawn accounts ($5.41 for the savings, and the other $31.08 to the chequing) The remaining negative balance of $63.42 in the chequing was credited by East Coast Credit Union (not the members funds) to bring the account to a zero balance, and then the chequing account was closed.
The pre-authorized payment of $8.50 came out of the savings account in March 2023, it was returned, and no NSF or overdraft fee was charged, only a $1.00 service charge for the transaction.

In April 2023, the negative $1.00 was credited bringing the savings account back to a zero balance. The savings account remained at a zero balance for the next 13 months. During these 13 months the surplus shares earned 0.16 cents. In May of 2024 the share account of $5.00 as well as the surplus share of 0.16 was debited for inactive service charges and the membership was closed. There have been no deposits from the member in over a year.
The account cannot be reopened, however if the complainant wishes to open a new membership, they can certainly contact us to book an appointment.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Statements can be provided to the complainant if needed.

      Thank you
