We were looking specifically for a backup heat source for when the power went out for up to a day or more. We had been considering a propane fueled woodstove but the salesman said that the government disallowed battery backup for the stoves for safety reasons. Salesman then advised us to get a Rinnai wall furnace powered by propane which was much more expensive coincidently. He said we could buy a plug in backup battery from ****** or ****** for less than a $100. We kept asking him for a specific place/site for this purchase and he kept saying the same thing but could not be specific. We had already had the Rinnai installed and hooked up to propane. Turns out this salesman’s claim of an inexpensive plug in battery backup was false as those batteries are for computers, cell phones, etc. The guy finally admitted that it might give 10 minutes of power only, if that. So we had spent $8000 for another source of heat (already had a primary source) but could not find a battery for backup. Our internet research found an unacceptably huge battery, a Hugo, which cost approx $1000 for maybe only 4 hrs of power, which was compatible with the Rinnai. We found out he told a neighbouring man the same things who luckily caught on in time. We called out the salesman for his deceit and the company was left with no other option but to give our money back and remove everything. However, we are out money from the propane supplier for delivery, installation and rental fees. We hope they are going to be honest about the true amount of money back for unused propane when they finally come to remove the two propane tanks in mid-January. Meanwhile there are holes in our wall and siding and here we are with no plan for back up heat during power outages. Another disturbing thing is that when their gas fitters removed everything the worker said that over the past few years they usually sold like one Rinnai per year and suddenly they have sold like six! Hmmmm
