    Driveway replaced last fall, This spring, it was noticed that outside edges along the grass line were beginning to crack and deteriorate. Later this summer a vertical crack in the center of the driveway appeared spanning approximately 20 ft. Contractor claims that cracks are not warranted since underground movement cannot be controlled. Well understood, however deterioration along the edges appears to be caused by other factors. (Neighbour’s driveway done at the same time, without similar issues, although the asphalt was laid between surrounding interlock stone.) It should be noted that the existing base of the driveway was deemed as acceptable at the time of installation and that digging 18 inches with a new base was not necessary. Contractor is offering to ‘seal’ the driveway and split costs 50/50, not a solution! Only resolution would be to replace the driveway with new asphalt, or replacement with an entirely new base (dig 18 inches). In the latter case, homeowner would be willing to pay the incremental cost as was quoted in the original contract. Images attached.
