Western Salvage came to clean up our farm Sept/23. They were provided forms to fill out to keep the metal separate, as our brother owned the equipment portion of the metal & we were dealing with our other brother's Estate with the other portion of the metal. After several attempts we were finally able to contact them & were shocked to receive a bill after they took all our metal. They charged for a truck/trailer to come out which was not mentioned to us in the numerous meetings & phone calls with ****. Unfortunately, we did make the mistake of asking how much it would be to clean up the bin floors after squishing them, but were never told of any cost to cut the bins up, &, another independent track hoe operator did 2.5 hours of clean up of what they left behind after their "clean up". Our issue is that we were not informed of being charged for the truck/trailer to come & get the metal, for the bins to be cut up & being overcharged for the bin floor clean up. They didn't keep the metal separate as they promised they would when we gave them the forms. They also took other metal that was not supposed to go & with no explanation of why it was taken other than they thought we said so, which we did not. Usually there is paint to mark items, but they brought none.

We have since called other metal companies & all say that none of that is usually charged for (the bins to be cut up, the bottoms cleaned up & definitely not a charge for a truck to come out to get the metal). **** was also called again with no mention of these charges.

In the attached documentation there is a note of yard clean up cost which was mutually decided not to be done.

Usually you are paid immediately when the metal is picked up, but because they were late for the job we were not able to stay another day or go out again as it is a 5 hour round trip for us to go to our farm. ** ****** **** *** **** **** ** *** ***** ******** ** ** *** ******* ** *** ** ****** ** ******* ** **** ******

As for this Complaint.  **** Meet with the Sisters and they went through the job he indicated the Price we pay for load of steel and they wanted more things done and Charged hourly but would just come off the price of steel so no money would probably be exchanged.  This job was more then just a Metal Pick up.  There was numerous thing in the Quonset that had to be moved by hand.  Vehicles boosted started and moved, they also wanted stuff moved into Quonset.  The company had two guys on the ground One operator and a truck driver.   There was 19.5 Hours Clocked in by the Operator on this job.  We charged them only 4.5 For the Track hoe and Operator,  our Operator had 19.5 clocked hours in From Sept 5-12.  He hauled several wood floors and other garbage to the pit for them plus leveled out a pad where a trailer had once sat.  We charge for trucking to jobs that are not just a simple scrap metal recovery as this Job was not.  As for the Clients said they wanted things itemized **** wrote down weights for them.  On Ticket it was broke from load price to weight per ton in the comments for them hoping that would help them sort out with their family.  The Complainant stating that she has talked to other scrap metal companies that they don't charge is a unfair judgement to Western Salvage.  We don't normally charge either but this was not just a come get metal job there was lots of hours and personnel involved.  Also we do not mark items it is up to them to do so and they decided to verbally go through.  The Old fuel tanks that accidently understood by my operator to go was apologized for and had agreed to replace them when we come across some again.   We feel we already have given them a deal, with the hours that had been spent there are more then what was invoiced.  We didn't want to bill them more then what the load was because felt that would not be acceptable.  There was a $66 dollar bill after which was agreed no payment needed.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

There was absolutely no talk of no money being exchanged, or for being charged hourly, if this was accurate we would not have went with them.  There was no mention of charging for trucks if it wasn't a straight metal pick up.  As mentioned in our original complaint, we had 2 separate areas of metal.  The first was all the equipment metal and bins (which was our brothers) and the other metal which included metal from the quonset, a pile outside the quonset, a vehicle and a trailer (was was our brothers that had passed away).

Yes, they did help us move things out of the quonset as the original date that Western Salvage was supposed to be at our farm, they didn't show up and we had 7 people there to help us unload the quonset (people missed work to help us).  When **** wanted to reschedule we told him that we were concerned that we wouldn't be able to get people to help so soon and he said "that's no problem, I have guys that can help"......with no mention of costs to us.  It is a 5 hour round trip for us to get to our farm.

It was our mistake asking how much it was to clean up the bin floors (as mentioned above they said that they hauled several wood floors however they charged us for it).  It was confirmed in a 3rd party conversation with **** that they don't usually charge for that.  The pit was right beside where the bins were located.  As mentioned before an independent track hoe operator spent 2.5 hours cleaning up what Western Salvage left behind so we don't feel that the hours charged on that was fair.  The independent operator was there when we went back to the farm to check things out after repeatedly trying to contact Western Salvage for over a month.  There was one piece of garbage from the quonset hauled to the pit.

The pad was not levelled, it is uneven with a huge trench still running across it,  however the septic tank and cover were completely buried, they knew that there was a septic tank there but covered it up anyway.

We were not told to mark things or else we would have, the only choice we had was verbal.  Unfortunately their guys did not pay attention.  We told them what was to go and they just decided to take everything including things that were supposed to stay.

This is the first that we have heard that they were at our farm from September 5 - 12, **** texted my sister on the 6th intimating that they were done  at approx. 1 p.m. We were there on the 5th, but because it is 5 hours for us to get to and from the farm we didn't return on the 6th.....which is why we reiterated what was to go and what was to stay as far as the metal prior to leaving on the 5th.  We find it a little hard to believe that they were there that long given the mess that was left there.  They had originally told us that it would only take one day.

We specifically asked for the forms to be filled out.  **** said it wouldn't be a problem and so did his operator.  As we originally said, one was filled out, one wasn't.  Unfortunately we are not familiar with being able to read what was on the ticket and it did not help us sort it out.....which we told them and asked repeatedly for the forms we gave them to be filled out.  They were aware that our brother expected to be paid  for his equipment and bins and the other portion of the metal was for our late Brother's Estate.

We felt compelled to contact other companies after receiving the bill from Western Salvage and having all these charges on it that were not mentioned or discussed. When I told one company that we were charged for a truck and trailer to come out they said not to go with them, unfortunately it was too late at that time as Western Salvage had added in all these charges which they neglected to mention.

If **** knew that he was going to charge us for all these "extra" things he also knew full well that most of that metal was not ours but our brothers and we were very clear about keeping it separate.  Not doing this as our business we had no idea that these things cost....we thought they were very helpful until the bill arrived.

      Sincerely,

      ***** *******
