I felt taken advantage of because I had vision insurance. I went to ~10 opticians in *********. I chose to work with Vision Plastics USA, Inc., dba ************* (UE) because they had the best pair of eyeglass frames I found and liked. The first mistake I made was not getting a quote for the services I requested. I assumed that the cost of the frames and attributes of the glasses would be comparable to those of the other opticians I visited.Firstly, it took a long time to get my glasses after ordering them. Over a month. I had to call back a couple of times to ask about their status. Then when I asked for a copy of my invoice, it took me the third attempt and months later to get it. The third attempt was precipitated after I called my insurance company about the claim that UE submitted for me. I was stunned when the insurance company told me that they were billed $1,135!The frames I purchased were $285 and I was told there was a 30% discount on them. My insurance EOB did not show that discount. My EOB itemized the charges submitted to them which included Fitting of Spectacles, $75; Polycarbonate or Equal Lens, $50; Scratch Resistant Coating, $25; Anti-reflective Coating, $175; Trifocals, $525.After getting a copy of my EOB, I went to two reputable opticians in ********* and got an estimate for all the itemized attributes of the glasses listed above except for the frames. The results were within 10% of each other and ~$350 less than UE.I have not raised my issues with UE because they did accept the 80% insurance coverage for the total bill and zeroed out the remaining balance. Nonetheless, with the 20% discount, the cost was still ~$300 more than the other ************* I got quotes from.Because UE put me off twice when I requested an invoice and protracted the process, my gut told me that something was fishy. It stunk to high heaven. I don't believe that UE did anything illegal but I do believe they demonstrated unethical business behavior.
