About a year ago after a covered dental cleaning, I inquired about getting my permanent retainer removed to aid in easier cleaning. I wanted to know how much my dental insurance paid for and what I would owe afterwards. The person at the dental office that takes care of such inquiries did not know off-hand and said she would check for me and send word via email about the cost out of pocket for me less insurance. That email detailed how much my dental insurance would pay, as an estimate, and that I'd have a 'you pay' balance of $125.50. After a quick discussion with my spouse, it seemed within reason of our budget. The retainer was removed a week or so later (mid-late Feb2023) and paid in full. Months go by and there's nothing to contradict everything was fully paid. My dispute comes in the form of a bill via mail stating I owed $325.83 in early Jan2024. I called their office to discuss the matter. I was told that my dental insurance didn't cover the removal. I was told that the amount I paid was only an 'estimate'. I feel as though I was lied to and that the person in charge of running insurance claims for the dentist office made mistakes and is trying to get me to pay for them. My spouse and I have attempted to solve this bill by asking the dental office to split the cost with us, but was denied. Upon further review of the dental insurance policy I have, it clearly states on the webpage that the procedure I had requested was not at all covered. We understand that every policy isn't the same, but I requested them to look into my policy and see if it was covered. How can they in good faith, run my insurance for an estimate and not see that the procedure is not even covered? I can admit to not knowing every caveat within my own insurance, but I am not a dental insurance specialist who should know such things as their primary role in the dental office. If I had known the procedure wasn't covered, it would not have been done. Documents are available upon request.
