Daughter took her Dodge Caravan to for oil service to Express Oil *************, ********** **. She mentioned a noise under the hood. She left the vehicle for repair. They replaced AC Idler Pulley $115. Then called back and said it needed a new alternator. They charged $460 for rebuilt alternator and $255 labor. Unbelievable rip-off by needlessly replacing the alternator and charging outrageous prices. I called to discuss and did not receive any resolution. There was no alternator warning light, no problem with battery charging, no problem starting. The over $700 charge for alternator replacement was not needed and is an example of taking advantage of a naive young lady who has no knowledge of auto repairs.

I spoke with the manager of Express Oil on Winchester Road yesterday concerning the complaint. I asked why the alternator was needlessly replaced. He said there was a noise. I asked him why he replaced the ** belt pulley and he said it was about the noise. I asked if the alternator output was tested or checked and he said no. It only takes two minutes to hook a volt meter to the battery terminals and start the engine to see if the voltage rises from 12v to 14v which would indicate that the alternator is working correctly. He repeated that this was not done and it was replaced due to a 'noise'.

The ** belt pulley was replaced before the alternator to correct the 'noise'. The alternator was not tested, simply replaced for no good reason. No symptoms were of alternator problems in the vehicle; no warning light, no battery charging issue, no starting issues.

The manager had no reasonable explanation for replacing the alternator and refused to discuss a refund.
