We called the shop about two lamps needing repair--one would not light at all, and the other with imbedded bulb ends in its two sockets which we could not remove. We were told that the first one probably needed a new switch, which would require a small amount of labor, and the other would be no problem for them to remove. We brought them in and were told they would be ready in exactly one week. We called after a week and were told that they were working on them and they would be ready about 2PM that day. We called again that afternoon and they said they were still in progress, but they would call that afternoon when finished. No call that day, but they did call the next morning and say they were ready. Here's the problem: when we picked them up, we found that (1) they had replaced the sockets in the lamp with the imbedded bulbs, which we did not authorized or request, and (2) they had repaired the main switch but had also replaced sockets in the two small bulbs in the lower part of the lamp, which were working and never needed to be replaced. When asked why all the sockets had been replaced, they said their policy was to make lamps like new from top to bottom during repairs. The bill was $138, which we told them was enough to buy new lamps! They lowered the bill to $130 by crediting us for a couple of sockets, meaning to us that we were eaten up by labor costs, a far cry from my initial encounter with them over the phone. Lesson learned.
Recommendation to others patronizing The Shade Above: (1) specify exactly what you want repaired and get an estimate including labor costs; (2) make sure they know to call if they encounter any issues, so that you can decide if the repairs are worth it.
