*******: In August 2007, someone was using the **** letters after their name. I called IITAP to verify those credentials and was told the person obtained their **** in 2009. At that time, this person did not have a masters degree or a license. To my best knowledge, this person obtained their undergraduate degree around 2011. According to the ********************, this person registered as an intern in FEB of 2014; they finally obtained their license (LMHC) in AUG of 2017. I asked ********************** how this person was able to get approved to obtain their **** certification prior to obtaining a license, a masters degree, and seemingly their undergraduate degree. IITAP would not give any explanation for it. I never expected this question to become controversial. They refused to provide any response via phone or email. They flippantly told me to refer to the state licensing board. The state *********** can't actually provide any information on why or how IITAP would afford this credential to someone prior to getting their license. They also don't govern over *********************** pre-reqs for their ****. I understand why someone who is reported to the state while holding this credential should afterwards be reported to IITAP. But that is unrelated to why IITAP afforded the credential to someone prior to getting a degree or license.According to the ********************** website, "To become a Certified *** Addiction Therapist (****), a practitioner must have a Masters-level degree, be fully licensed or certified (depending on country/state) and have at least 5 years of experience in the counseling or psychotherapy field. Note: These requirements must be met at the time of application for FINAL certification rather than at the commencement of training. ****s are also required to pass a background check and must sign a statement of compliance with ethical guidelines." IITAP's refusal to simply address this issue is concerning and potentially dangerous to the well being of the population they serve.
