1 starWe hired Penguin Air to perform repairs on one of our AC units last month and were charged $2,825.12 to replace a 45/5 MFD dual capacitor, a compressor saver hard start kit for a 3.5 to 5 ton unit, and a 1/5 to 1/3 horsepower 825 RPM condenser fan motor. At the time, we trusted the technicians diagnosis and assumed the pricing was in line with industry standards.Unfortunately, after experiencing continued performance issues and speaking with several other reputable HVAC companies, we learned we were charged nearly three times the typical rate. Every company we contacted quoted between $850 and $1,000 for the exact same work, including labor.I understand that pricing can vary between companies, but this level of markup feels excessive and opportunistic. These are not custom parts or complex diagnostics. This is basic repair work that should not cost nearly $3,000.We feel taken advantage of during an extremely hot time of year when families are vulnerable and desperate to get their AC working. What we paid was not just overpriced, it was predatory.This review is meant to help others be aware. Do not agree to any repairs without getting a second opinion and checking the pricing of common parts. A condenser fan motor replacement should not cost $1,751.We expected more from a company with such a prominent reputation. Sadly, it seems the priority is profit, not people.Ive read other reviews and noticed the company often responds by saying the customer signed the estimate. Of course we signed itbecause it was 114 degrees, we were desperate to get our AC working, and we trusted the technician to be fair. Signing an estimate does not justify excessive markups or taking advantage of vulnerable situations. Ethical companies stand behind both their work and their pricing.Penguin Air Plumbing & Electrical

Additionally, you have the peace of mind that comes with a licensed and trained professional performing the work. When we recently returned to your home to investigate why your unit was not maintaining temperature - we discovered that further repairs were necessary. When these findings were brought to your attention, the technician was asked to leave and therefore did have the opportunity to return cooling to the home. 1 starPenguin solicited us to do a $29 seasonal check up. Our AC was installed in 2019 and we have been gone (April - Oct) each summer since. It is under warranty for parts.The tech turned the thermostat down to 70 and came back from the attic to report a flow disparity. He showed us some pictures of the air handler. The price was $400. to do a leak search which could be complicated and anywhere from the attic to the outside unit. The leak was at the coil in the attic. He later went out to his truck for about 20 minutes to do an estimate which offered good at $3100, better at $3500 and best for $4,000. We were floored and told him we would get a second opinion,We immediately called the York Distributor and requested a reputable York Certified Contractor. He came out and made repairs at almost half the price of the good *********** issue: Penguin was charging for 14lbs of Freon at $200 per lb. Our unit only holds 7lbs. Apparently it is most typical for leaks to occur at the coil which it was. A very brief diagnosis. He also wanted to add a plenum to improve air to our front bedroom. The second opinion reported some straps had broken on the air tunnel and he lifted it up and restrapped it.When we advised the tech we would get a second opinion he left leaving a panel door open on the air handler meaning we would have been aerating the attic. He also left the thermostat at 70. No service was completed.I did contact the office to discuss our experience of the sloppy job and the ridiculous Leak Search charge of $400. Second opinion guy charges $100 for same. And how that really killed the deal of using their business. I feel it would be important to speak to an actual service manager or technician who might understand the complaint rather than customer service who basically fields the call and hides behind we can charge what we want.Penguin Air Plumbing & Electrical

While we understand that our pricing may not have aligned with the second opinion you received, our service charges reflect our investment in highly trained technicians, quality parts, diagnostic tools, and much more. That said, we always aim to be transparent about our recommendations and pricing before any work is performed, and we regret that you were left feeling frustrated by the process.
We are also concerned to hear that a panel door may have been left open and the thermostat was not reset after the visitthose are not the standards we set for our technicians, and we appreciate you bringing it to our attention.

1 star?? PUT MY HOUSE IN DANGER OF BURNING DOWN. ******. ??If I could give negative stars, I would. I have a 10 year warranty with these fools but they will never ever step foot on my property again. I now have to pay another **** company to do things Penguin should be covering. Constant issues with the **** unit they installed. Incompetent at troubleshooting issues on many many occasions. The other **** company I now have to pay for easily identifies issues. Multiple issues with the whole home ductwork they installed (and also lied about.) THE WORST PART - the electrical wiring components that go from the unit directly to the house were installed completely negligently and a FIRE HAZARD THAT PUT MY FAMILY'S LIFE AT RISK. They even used bubble wrap to "waterproof" an open hole on the box. The **** company who did the repair was shocked at the negligence. The other **** guys luckily found the issue because it literally sparked at them, which again, could have BURNED DOWN MY HOUSE. They told me to contact the *** and report Penguin, but unfortunately it was over the 2 year window after initial install that they have jurisdiction. Yes, we have been battling with Penguin for several years. They had the nerve to say they can't do anything else "for free"... that they did wrong in the first place. ?? I don't want anything "for free." I want them to be competent and do their job AND NOT PUT MY FAMILY'S LIFE AT RISK. Penguin will make excuses, lie, and gaslight about this, but I have photos and invoices with comments if anyone feels the need to check into what I am saying. ?? We understand that your situation is frustrating, but we determined after numerous visits that there is no issue with the function of your unit. The issues regarding your duct work were resolved within two months of installation and your unit was functioning at manufacturer standards on our last visit back in October. Each time we sent a technician to your home we addressed what issues were found free of charge, but more often than not we found your unit functioning as it should.
The electrical work you are referring to would be original to the home as we use the preexisting home-to-unit wiring components. We assure you that it is never our standard of practice to use bubble wrap as a waterproofing agent, meaning that this is also a preexisting issue.

5 starsAir conditioner went out in my daughters house in Arizona, while I live in ********. I was afraid that someone would take advantage of the situation. Penquin came out looked everything over and determined that a complete replacement was needed. They too the time to brake everything down and explained why everything was needed. Several different people came out to make sure everything was done right and that we were satisfied installation and cleanup.
