From June 3rd - June 12th, I was in contact with a woman daily. I have been on the site for months and have been in contact with a few women. I express to them within the first few letters that I am not looking for a penpal but to develop a serious relationship. When the women are aware that I don't intend to do a tour (I can't travel due to my neurological condition), they ALL replied that they want to take things slowly. My analysis of this site, as I was a Commercial Lender for a large bank for many years and assessed many corporations, is as follows:The site entices men initially with beautiful women profiles to begin conversation. If the men choose to only communicate by letters instead of a tour, the women will attempt to keep the men writing letters and opening photos to spend money with stating that they only want to take things "slowly". Once they have spent a good amount of money, they will agree to give out their information which costs the men five hundred dollars to obtain. At times the women become disinterested when setting up a meeting (per prior complaints). In addition, the men have stated that when they pay for the tour, they ask the women they have been communicating with in the particular region to attend the gatherings at the tours. Most make excuses not to be able to attend and a whole different group of women that aren't on the site attend instead See profile picture vs tour videos). I sent an email to Foreign Affair to express my suspicions and dissatisfaction.I understand that the chances they will do the appropriate resolution of refunding me the money for the correspondence I had with **** is low as they already denied me once and blamed me, I guess, for her short responses. If anything, I hope that others intending to sign up for this site read this complaint and decide if they, too, would like to risk the financial and emotional toll, as I and many others with complaints, have endured.Business Response

We did reach out and speak with the client, he was obviously interested in meeting someone. We have been helping International couples meet for ************************************************** that time. We do stand behind our service and if someone is truly dissatisfied with the service we will do our best to resolve it. In this case we did issue a refund as the client does not intend to use the service any longer (normally takes two to three days to process). He had written to 3 or 4 women in different countries, with fairly short correspondences. We do many video calls and in person meetings with women from all around the world on a daily basis, hundreds if not thousands of them each month, you can see the hundreds and hundreds of reviews from past clients on the site. Some women may agree to a meeting or call with no correspondence and some may want to get to know the person better prior to doing a call, as it is something that does take quite a bit of time for the woman. There was a woman that was interested in the client, but because of certain things in their dialogue she chose not to pursue the relationship, he had told us as well that he was very blunt with her. If men meet the women in person, individually, or via a tour there is no cost to exchange contact info,we encourage that they do. We regret it did not work out for this client and have additionally offered him a discount if he would like to experience a tour and meet hundreds of wonderful women in person, hopefully we can still assist with that at some point.Customer Answer

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved. We agreed to disagree on some of the concerns I had with the site. They did back their policy of refunding if a client has a complaint. I was dissatisfied with their initial declination and tone in their declination response which resulted in me contacting the BBB. Furthermore, I was disheartened by the business response when speaking with them by phone about my neurological condition which restricts my travel. Instead of encouraging me and providing guidance to find someone that may be living within the **, they stated that, if they had this previous medical knowledge, they would have advised me to not sign up for this site and refunded my money right away. This was stated to me a few times during the conversation.
I will continue on the site as I do believe that they have the best interest of both parties and they have been around for quite awhile. I will just continue to be upfront and honest with any potential connection. I appreciate their time and efforts.

Ive chatted with ladies on this website for over three years now. Ive always had good meaningful conversations with them until recently. In the past two weeks a lady I have been writing to two and three times a day has all of a sudden started writing differently. Her responses do not make sense at all. Her responses are 5 lines or less. She does not sign her name to the responses. Her responses do not reference me at all. Then I started receiving the same type of vague responses from other women. Once again the responses make absolutely no sense, they do not reference me directly and are not written in the same tone as all previous letters from these specific ladies. Also I was receiving responses regularly from all these ladies and now I rarely get even one response a day from any lady. I showed these responses to a friend who works for the government for internet crimes and he said the responses could be AI generated but are definitely written by a different personality. Ive spent over $1,500 in the past few months corresponding with several women on this site. I now have a high level of suspicion these women are fake or the profiles are fake. I am requesting a full refund of my recent $1,500 invested with correspondence with this one lady ***** especially and the other ladies *** and Juliets which now all seem to be fake profiles. My heart feels sad and I feel emotionally violated. All the responses seemed so real and heart felt until recently. If it would have only been one lady who responded to me in this fashion I would have thought that lady had only lost interest and I would have moved on. The fact three ladies responded to me in the exact same fashion tells me this site is a scam. I demand a refund of $1,500. This is a scam that does not only affect people financially but also emotionally and this sites owners / management be ashamed of themselves Coincidentally this all occurred after I requested ***** in order to visit a lady.Business Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We reached out to the client immediately and discussed this with him, and set an action plan in place. Unfortunately, he did not contact us with these issues first, we always work to resolve any issue whether it is from this forum or directly communicated to us, we give every issue our full attention.
We are in the process of reviewing the correspondence and trying to identify the issues. Unlike most do it yourself sites, all correspondence goes through Match Makers for translations etc., and it is always possible that there are different Match Makers involved which can change the tone of the letter, we continue to look into that. We are also trying to arrange 3 free zoom calls so that the client can see and speak with the women directly and ask them questions re correspondence or anything else he would like. Additionally, because he is a valued client and has concerns about this particular issue, we have issued a provisional credit of $1,500.00 until we fully resolve it. We also spoke about other vehicles that he was unaware of that may be much better for him to use in order to meet the women he is interested in. We have programs such as the Club, where our Match Makers work directly with you and introduce you to the women you are interested in, process IMBRA, exchange contact info etc. We also have group tours and Elite and Executive services.
We will continue to work until this is resolved and hopefully work with him with the more personal, direct ways to actually meet the women in person and move forward with a relationship once you have actually met. Thank you.Customer Answer

Between 3/3/2025 and 3/9/2025 to make a long story short, communicated with someone I came to believe later was using a fake profile. Based on the story of things that this person was saying in her letters made no sense. I spent $177.92 on a fake profile and I immediately stopped communicating and made a complaint with the business. I spoke with their customer service representative on the morning of 3/10/25 and requested for a refund. The fake profile was ******. She may have been a real person, but they were basically posing as these people. I am seriously considering filing a federal complaint because this is wire fraud and committing fraud across state lines. I will wait for a few days and see if i get a refund. They know how to look me up through my email address and see everything that was written in addition to the complaint I sent to their email. Also, the person I thought I was communicating with was sending pictures which I had to pay for and they were repeats some of them. Therefore, they were double charging for pictures. How could someone say they currently live in ******, that Spanish is their native tongue, yet can not answer an email in Spanish? This is just one of the inconsistencies with this profile. The business knows via the email I sent them and the phone call I had with them the other inconsistencies, which any person would see as this being a fake profile.Business Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. ******************** has been working with the client to resolve this issue. We have given him a full refund for what he has spent which is actually more than he requested. Since 1995 we have worked hard to ensure there are no fake profiles and the women are the ones, with the assistance of the Matchmakers, corresponding, as many of these women will ultimately meet the men in person or at least via video calls to start. There are many checks and balances we employ to help ensure compliance, starting with the intake of the profile (which easily can take two weeks or longer to complete all of the verification steps) to ongoing checks and verifications. As with any large site there is always a possibility of issues. We continue to look into this, I know we have requested videos from the woman in question, and answers to the questions the client was concerned about, and I believe they have been sent to the client. In any case, because we stand behind the service and the client is not satisfied we have issued the refund. I have reached out by phone and have not been able to speak with him at this point, in an effort to further understand and resolve this issue. We will continue to look into this issue from our end to determine what other steps may need to be taken. Thank you.Customer Answer

I spoke with the client today and we have resolved the issue. He is a very good client who has been with us for several months. There was a simple misunderstanding involving a woman he was briefly corresponding with that gave him concerns, however he worked through it with our customer service staff. He asked to retain his funds on his account with the site for later use, which we have done. He also indicated that he will be using our service in the near future to travel and meet some of the women, with our assistance, which is the overall objective of the service. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.Initial Complaint

I have been in contact with several ladies on their website and it turns out none of them were real ladies. Every time they tell you to contact them and to go see them you have to talk to them over the phone to find out and then when you try and do that they're scams. It says they speak English they don't. One girl even told her interpreter she's never wrote me even though I've gotten letters from her for 2 to 3 months. I want a refund for everything I've ever done with this company they owe me more than $350Business Response

We reached out to **** immediately upon seeing this complaint, as we were very surprised as to the nature of it. He is a sincere individual who really wants to begin a relationship. There was quite a bit of confusion surrounding his call with the woman he was interested in. The interpreter/matchmaker for the call never told him the woman did not write him or was not involved,he told him that all correspondence goes through an interpreter/matchmaker at the office (which is how the site has worked for 30 years, whether or not she speaks English), so he thought the woman was not involved in the correspondence which is why he was frustrated. The woman was involved and wanted to do the call but could not do it on the day they previously wanted and asked to do it 3 days later. He had wanted to do the call that day, which again led to some frustration. All the women on the site are real and provide government ID and other documents that we retain. After speaking with him in depth and learning of his circumstances we both agreed that there were better options in other countries that will provide him with much better odds of success. I cannot go into the details for privacy reasons but **** is aware of this and agrees. We are moving forward with him to try and find the best possible candidates that will work within his current circumstances and expectations. He is currently speaking directly with our Matchmakers. Thank you for your assistance with this matter!Initial Complaint

The dates of these transactions occurred over a 4 year period. I have explained on the site that I am a former federal agent, worked for the ******************* and I still refer cases to them. In my particular case this site has hired women to write letters for the "supposedly lady" selected on this site. I found out that in the lady's absence or on vacation, the site has hired other people to write the letters for them; therefore, you do not have the lady you thought you were writing to. This has occurred since the actual meeting places in ******* have been under attack, so the site has been left to take money from its male clients to make up for the loss revenues from the War. Ukraine is noted for being corrupt and this is not the only scam being perpetrated by this site. I have written a letter to this site, let them know that they are going to be investigated soon. If any other men have encountered this, please so note.Business Response

We have been in contact with the client as he contacted us directly and have spoken about the issues and working with him to resolve it. He is a valued client who has been with us for over 10 years. There are some personal issues he shared that are really not appropriate to share here, however after speaking with him I have gained a tremendous amount of respect for him given what he has been going through and how he handled it. We are working with him to resolve issues he has and assist him in moving forward to meet the woman in question or others. Our service is different than most in that we do give a tremendous amount of support to the women and the men with the service including correspondence. All letters go through a paid matchmaker/translator and they can and do assist the women with such. This is one of the reasons your opportunity as a man is much higher to correspond and meet these women then on most sites. However, we do not advise long correspondences for many reasons. We are one of the few that push for men to go and meet the women they are writing to or not to write at all and use one of our venues such as a group tour to meet hundreds of women in person. We have had thousands of marriages over the last 30 years, many with no correspondence. Correspondence can be a tool for a short term but if you are serious about moving forward it should quickly move to video calls, meetings. Tours or one on one introductions, of which we do hundreds and hundreds every year are a great way in which to meet many of these women in person and see if there really is any chemistry or not. We will continue to work with the client to fully resolve any issues he has and have already started working with him to actually take a tour with us at virtually no charge so he can start meeting many of the these wonderful women who really do want to meet.Initial Complaint

I have requested a refund from this business for communication I had with three girls I believe are fake profiles. The business has not responded to 2 emails and 1 voice mail I left them. I have had satisfactory communications with other girls on their site, but these 3, I believe are a scam.Between Aug 6 and Sept I, 2024, I exchanged letters and photos with ******* (******) ***** (******) and *****(******) for a total cost of $347.17. I suspicioned these were fake profiles based on our communication and requested from each girl to either do a live skype video through the website to verify their identity, or in the alternative to exchange contact info where such videos could be done. All three girls refused, citing they would only exchange letters through the website if I paid the fee.I sent two emails to the website, (9/1/24, 9/4/24) detailing my concerns and requested a refund. I suggested the business provide the live video between the parties for 2 minutes, not to further the romance relationship but to verify the girls' identity. I offered to do the videos remotely, or I would physically go to the business address in ******* so everything could prove legitimate. The business (A Foreign Affair) has not responded.I left a voice mail with the business customer service **** on Wednesday Sept 4, 2024 2:08 pm (14:08) They have not returned my call. I also want the balance remaining in my account refunded, of $95.05, for a total refund of $442.22Business Response

We reached out to the client and had multiple conversations via these issues. Not sure why no one responded, we normally always respond, however it is possible that the E-mail he had was not correct, you can always call ************ during business hours and reach a live person. We reached out to the women in question. All are very real, we have government ID and intake videos of them on file. One was upset with a letter sent by the client which contained an ultimatum, among other things, unfortunately she asked to have her profile removed. Another did provide a video for the client and is willing to do a live video call with him, which we will do for them at no charge. Due to misunderstandings as to how the site works, we offered the client the option of closing his account and a full refund, or moving forward with the other woman and the call, he opted for moving forward with us. There seemed to be some confusion as to how our service works compared to others. We are much different in the way we support the women and men on the site. We are a buffer for both at the start until they meet or are at least comfortable with each other. There have been numerous issues with ********** services and apps resulting in robberies, kidnappings and even murders. That does not happen with our service because of the support and help we provide. However, we do want the men and women to meet as soon as possible and exchange contact info and develop a healthy relationship as soon as possible. All of this is written on our site, and is important info for anyone new interested in using the service.Initial Complaint

I participated in the pay per letter model they had so I could speak with a particular girl. This went on for about 3 months and all of the girls' messages were warm and she constantly conveyed that I was important to her and that she was very serious about moving our relationship forward. Finally, we were able to have a Zoom call. During the call, the girl didnt smile, didnt make eye contact, and did not ask a single question. Her demeanor in the call seemed cold and more like a person who was obligated to be there. I was very confused. I was so concerned that I actually asked her about the call. She reassured me that she enjoyed it. I wondered what the disconnect could be. I thought that if she signed the ***** id be able to get to the bottom of this. In her very first message to me off site, she stated how she was sick, had been having trouble paying for the treatments she needed and that she did not mention this before, because she did not trust the site. I enquired what her illness was. She finally responded and then listed medical issues including potentially having cancer and needing to have an operation and was barely earning enough for food! When i said i was sorry and wished i could give her a hug, she said she cant pay her bills or feed her dog on hugs! This was a big red flag to me, as I felt like I was being groomed for her to offer her money. I felt it was a very strange way to start a conversation. It took her 4 days to respond to my last text. On the site, she responded within 24 hours and put 100 times more effort into her responses. Off the site, she acts as if she has very minimal interest. I believe that the women on AFA are compensated for the letters, pictures, Zoom calls and ***** forms. Why else would there be such a change on and off the site. In my case, I believe the girl signed the ***** just so she could try and get more money from me directly and now that I showed no interest in doing that, she has basically lost interest.Business Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. As soon as we received this concern we reached out to the client to discuss the issue. We then reached out to the woman and the affiliate agency and explained the problem. They sent back a video where the woman answered some questions we were asking with respect to this issue. Whenever an issue, such as this, arises we do our best to look into the situation, always treating both parties with respect, as often the truth is in the middle. The client has raised some important issues and has provided us with some supporting documents that have been very helpful, which we greatly appreciate. It is against our policies for members to ask for money via correspondence. That is something that should always be brought to our attention if it occurs. We have not yet been able to fully resolve this, given the foreign nature of this and the time to go back and forth. The BBB requires an answer within 7 calendar days. At this time we are continuing to look into the issues, however we have communicated with the client by phone,E-mail, and text several times and will continue to do so over the next couple days until it is fully resolved. We are proud of the service we offer and have been since 1995. Yes, there can be issues from time to time, just like any business, especially dating services, but the test of a company is how they react to issues and if they truly stand behind their service and support their clients. We have assured the client that we will resolve it to his full satisfaction and will do so. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.Initial Complaint

I have been writing letters to a lady for well over a year. She seemed very interested in me and expressed wanting to meet. However she never wanted to sign the ***** (She was quite hostile about it) and never accepted a video or phone call. I also offered to take the tour and invite her, or have an individual meeting set up by the site which she refused and actively persuaded against the tour. Other red flags were the sheer about of photos she would send. When I asked her to send less she would agree but then send more shortly after while guilt tripping me to open them dont I look cute in this?. The entire experience did feel fraudulent but I fell for it anyways. Eventually I made a second profile to see if my fears were real. Sure enough, I messaged this lady a couple of sentences and got a response back. She was excited to talk to me and expressed she would be willing to move anywhere I desired. She then sent 3 more letters full of pictures and asking questions about me. I was pretty heart broken, but at least I had my answer. I contacted customer service to tell them my story, and was told they need to do an investigation before any refund happens. That was over a week ago with no word. I also havent received any new letters so I know something happened. Well I tried to call today, a few times. Every time I was sent to voicemail which is a problem I never had before. To me it seems like Ive been scammed and my only option left is to go through litigation. This site boasts about its real ladies wanting real relationships, so its sad to see how bad I was taken advantage of.Business Response

We reached out to the client immediately after receiving this report. He is serious about meeting someone and we are happy to assist. We did ask who he spoke with, as we have several offices, but he was not sure so we could not trace who took his original call, although it appears that somewhere we dropped the ball. Nor are we sure as to why when he called Friday he was unable to connect, we are open from 8:30 to 5 MST, with an operator always present. It appears she was hesitant to share contact info or even meet which happens from time to time, for several reasons, but rarely after this length of time. We informed the client that in the future if that happens early on to contact us so we can assist right away. We are currently in touch with the office and woman working to arrange a video call. The client can see and speak to the woman, ask any questions, especially about the issue with responding to the other profile. Women can and do respond to multiple profiles which men do as well, but it is important for them to discuss this. We are working to resolve this matter with the client, as he still has an interest in the woman. We will continue to work to resolve this situation to the full satisfaction of the client. It is obvious that he is serious and interested, unfortunately, against our advice, spent too much time and resources corresponding for a very lengthy time, something we caution anyone against doing. At this time we are in the process of arranging a video call, if the call goes well we will facilitate the exchange of contact info, and discuss the next steps. Again, we will resolve this issue to the clients full satisfaction and continue to work with him until we do so.Initial Complaint

In March 2024 I scheduled in person meetings with two women at a cost of $400.00. I was charged three times for this and have asked for a refund of the $800.00 overcharge. Additionally, one of the meetings did not take place resulting in an additional $125.00 refund being owed. After several attempts to recover the expected refund amount of $925.00 I have only received $400.00. While I have not yet committed to litigation to solve this problem, the lack of customer service from this company is making litigation the likely route I will go. Litigation is totally unnecessary as they have already identified the problem as being on their end. This was admitted in correspondence with *** who handles most of the refunds.Business Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. ******* is a valued client who has been with us for over 4 years. It seems the problem is more of a tech issue than anything. As soon as we saw this we reached out to him and had a very helpful conversation and was able to move forward to resolving the refund issue.
It is not clear whether it was a glitch on our end or he simply clicked the submit button more than once, but he was charged two extra times for his $400.00 order. He brought this to our attention and immediately two refunds for $400 each were submitted on April 4th. On April 10th, ******* notified AFA by e-mail that only one of the two $400 refunds had posted. We immediately responded to *******, with a screenshot showing that both credits were submitted. In that response, we also asked him to notify AFA if the credit still does not post within the next 2 business days. On April 18th, ******* got back in touch to let us know that the other credit for $400 still had not posted. That same day,we e-mailed ******* a document that our credit card processor requires whenever a refund that was flagged as a duplicate (which was the case here) has to be resubmitted. We requested that he sign the document and send it back, so the refund could be re-issued, and the Processor is assured it is not a duplicate refund. We were waiting for that form, however, it appears that ******* was not comfortable with signing it, thus the delay in the refund. Now that we have spoken he has said that he will sign the form so the Credit Card processor can submit the refund as we are not able to do so without that form. Again, ******* is a valued client,it is unfortunate that there was this tech issue (it is there, on the processor side, to help prevent duplicate refunds by mistake) and that our communication seemed to break down. We are confident that the refund will be processed as soon as we receive the documentation back from him, which he says should be in a day or so.
