Government Actions

Government Action: BBB reports on known government actions involving business’ marketplace conduct:
The Federal Trade Commission v Avast Software
The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

On February 22, 2024, Avast Software entered into an Order with The Federal Trade Commission. The Order settles allegations that the business distributed software that was promoted with a variety of privacy claims and protection from third party tracking, but stored and sold browsing information without the consumer’s consent. Under the terms of the Order, the business has been ordered to ban from sale or disclosure of browsing information, prohibit from misleading representations, delete browsing information data, provide notice to users, mandate a privacy program, and pay Monetary Relief  in the amount of $16,500,000. The Order was for settlement purposes only and should not be considered as an admission of guilt or finding of violation of the law.

This action is final.

On February 24, 2025, The Federal Trade Commission emailed notices to 3,690,813 consumers who bought antivirus software from Avast between August 2014 and January 2020. Consumers who are eligible to apply will get an email notice between now and March 7, 2025.

Eligible consumers can file a claim online at www.ftc.gov/Avast. Payment amounts will depend on several factors, including how many people file claims.

The deadline for filing a claim is June 5, 2025. Consumers who have questions or need help filing a claim should call the claims administrator at 866-290-0165 or email [email protected]. The Commission never requires people to pay money or provide account information to submit a claim or receive a refund
