On the recommendation of an arborist over 4 years ago, we have been hiring someone to trim *****% off the crown (top) of the tree every ***** months to help the tree stay healthy and live longer. The arborist said that proper pruning could extend the life by up to 5 or more additional years. We contacted Rods Tree Service to trim ***** % off the top of our ********************* tree and also reminded them to be careful with our ***************** nearby as it had been damaged during their previous work with us removing mistletoe a few months prior. The cost to trim *****% off the top of our ********************* tree was stated as $700 cash or $800 check and to be paid upon the time of completion. The appointment was 12/27when we would be out of town. When we returned home from family Christmas vacation on 12/30/23 we saw our Ash tree with the entire crown (top) of the tree removed, all leaf bearing limbs removed from the entire treeincluding entire limbs on the lower half of the tree (used for hanging bird feeders by my family and often visited by a pair of hummingbirds). The heavy topping and random lower limb removal will highly impact the health of the tree which in turn will lower the expected lifespan of the tree. Our property value has been lowered due to a decrease in the aesthetic quality of our tree. It is an eyesore, with jagged sawed off, splintered edges. Also, our apple tree was further damaged (by falling limbs or employee carelessness). We have contacted Rods Tree Service via phone message, phone call (I spoke with ******), and via email. We have been told that we asked for our tree to be handled in this way, that tree topping is not a big deal in regards to the life or health of a tree, and have not been apologized to for the current state of our poor tree.We are deeply saddened and distressed that our formerly lovely tree is now very much in danger of dying or becoming disease because of the carelessness of Rods Tree Service.Business Response

Good day,
I am aware of this complaint due to all the emails we have corresponding with each other. I have apologized for the misunderstanding and the apple tree that got a broken limb, I am more that happy to replace the apple tree. We wrote up a bid for you that stated TOPPING, MISTLETOE AND DEADWOOD and that is the work you approved and the work we did. You asking for 20-30% of the top was misleading in your request. You asked for something that you didn't necessarily want. If you want it trimmed only and not topped, stating you wanted it trimmed of the TOP was very misleading. We are not replacing a tree or removing a tree at our expense of a tree at its life expectancy when you approved work that wasn't for the best health of the tree.

A rep. from Rod's Tree Service came to my home to give an estimate on cutting up and removing two fallen trees in my backyard. He gave me a verbal estimate of $4,000.00. His crew came to do the work and, instead of giving me an invoice, billed my insurance company. I never saw or signed any form until after I received payment from the insurance company. I had to request a copy of the invoice from the insurance company. I was surprised that the amount billed was $9,600.00. Not even close to the estimate. I expected to hear from ***'s with an invoice for payment but, heard nothing for a month. I didn't call them because, a week after the first two trees fell, another tree split and I called Rod's for an estimate to have it removed. The estimate was $750.00. I scheduled a day to do the work but, they never showed, I never received a call and could not reach anyone in the office. I called the owner but, his mailbox was full. I called the next day (Saturday) and spoke with a woman in the office. She sounded very frazzled and said she'd call me back. She didn't. I called on Monday and the same woman claimed not to know what happened as, she hadn't been in the office. It was the same woman I spoke with on Saturday. I decided not to reschedule. A month later, I received a call from the owner, ***, who said he was coming to my home "to get my money". I told him I'd like an explanation as to why they didn't show for the second job and, why they charged such an exorbitant amount. He refused to answer either question and restated his intent to come to my home to "get my money and, to discuss your behavior." I told him he could send me a bill but, he was not to come to my home. He came to my home the next day and, was so belligerent that my daughter called the police. The deputy stated that he must leave or face arrest and, he eventually did. This guy should not be in business and, the BBB should be hesitant to claim him as a member.Yelp reviews since Jan. show I'm not alone.Business Response

Good day,
When we came out to review the tree, we were given the insurance information at that time so that we could bill them directly and was told to go ahead with the work. We let the owner know we will be billing the insurance company directly for time and materials to complete the job so that the homeowner does not have to pay the bill out of pocket, instead they wait for the insurance company to send payment to the owner so that they can send us a check.
We are not sure where the miscommunication for the $4000 bid came from but we do apologize for any misunderstanding. The invoice was sent to the insurance company and they sent out payment on 2/6/23 for our work completed in total of $9610.
We would be happy to offer a reconciliation of 10% off the total price for the hardship and misunderstanding of the emergency process.

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern and, though I find that this resolution is less than satisfactory to me, I feel I have no other option but to accept. I contacted BBB twice to ask what further actions might be taken and received no reply. This leads me to believe that business, rather than the consumer, is the priority with BBB. The fact that BBB allows a business like this, membership in your organization, says all I need to know about it. When the owner of ************* not only inflates the price of the service by more than double, fails to follow through on promised work and tries to intimidate the customer, what does that say about ******************** standards for membership? I will be seeking other options to hold the owner accountable for his actions. I will be sending a check for $8649.00 to Rod's Tree Service.
