We drove an hour to visit this nursery after calling ahead to ask if they had any multi-trunk Birch. They told me they did and we heaeded to Fresno to take a look. In addition to the Birch, we were looking for a number of other things. When we arrived, we were greated by a very sweet girl, but she said she had only been working there a week and didn't really know what they had or where things were. She pointed toward the huge area where all the varieties of trees were and said the Birch were over there somewhere. That was pretty vague, but at least she was pleasant. We headed toward the tree area (hubby hobbling along on crutches with a broken leg) and found some Himalayan Birch, but after consulting google, we decided this might not be the best option for us. We didn't see any other Birch and weren't sure where to look so headed back to a building where we thought we could get another employee to help. This time we were greeted by an older lady who again was pleasant, but not knowledgeable about specific types of trees. She agreed to check the inventory and at least see what was in stock. When she came back, she had a list of which types of Birch were available, but she did not recommend that we buy Birch for the valley weather. We assured her that we were replacing several 30 year old Birch trees that had thrived in our yard. The winter storms this year did them in and we had to take them out. She just was sure Birch wouldn't do well. Since she couldn't tell us anything about the different types that were in stock, we gave up. It would have been nice to be able to at least see what other types of shrubs and things were in stock. But, hubby was on crutches and though we could see other customers being ferried around on little carts and helped with their purchases, but this didn't appear to be an option with employees who didn't know what they were doing. We ended up spending hundreds of dollars at another nursery. Won't back back to Belmont Nursery.
