I signed up and paid a $1000 deposit to take a medical coder Course with *********************** at Delomar Test Prep. The class was offered for Mon nights and Saturday mornings. Class had been in session since April 2023, set to end September 2nd2023. The instructor ******* told the class she has randomly decided to change what days the class was offered as some students no longer wanted to "interrupt their weekend" with class on Saturday mornings. I told the instructor, the reason I signed up for this class specifically was because it was offered on Saturday mornings, and that is when I am off work and available. I pleaded with her that my son has aba therapy for Autism on Wednesdays (the day she planned to change the class to) and I really want to finish the course as we only had two months left. She then discharged me from the course, stating "I made her and the rest of my classmates feel like they caused my son angst". I had additionally been paying monthly of $325, and have been told I will not be receiving any of my money back. I was not allowed to finish the course or receive certification. I did not ask to be discharged, only if the course could stay on the same schedule. There was no mention of possible dates being changed at any time prior to my sign up. When I asked for a refund since there were no further services rendered, I was told no, the money is being kept because I "was almost finished with the course". I then requested for my certification, or at least for my membership ID, as once I was finished with the course, I would've been able to sit for the *** exam with AAPC. I was also declined that. I was scammed out of $1650, as I have no certification, no membership ID, and no opportunity to complete my scheduled course. I have also reached out the ***** who states this provider is should have no longer been offered on their site, and I should pursue all actions I deem necessary.

    Business Response

    Date: 07/07/2023

    Hello,

From the beginning of the course there has been outburst from ***** in the classroom.

    Outburst #1

It was the responsibility of the student to insure that her computer and internet be ready on the day of the Introduction of the class. She was having issues with her computer and I said to her " Because of the fact that you cannot see the slides I am presenting go ahead and sign-off and I will work with you 1:1 to get your problem resolved. I would schedule private time to get you up to speed before the next class meeting. Her response was that " she was offended because I asked her to drop off and felt that I made her feel bad" . In the end, I complied and did a personal 1:1 chat with her and helped her fix her problem.

    Outburst #2

Then when in one of the classes, I always asked if there are any questions before moving on to the next chapter. After I am in the middle of the next chapter, she decides to ask a question of the previous ****** I obliged and answered her question. She then proceeded to state in class that "she felt that I was annoyed by her asking the question. I then proceeded to ask to remain at the end of the class so as not to have my students involved in this personnal discussion.  I reminded her that if she had these types of comments that she should either wait till the end of the class to express her feelings or to go into a personal phone text chat with me. She understood and would comply.

    Outburst #3

During the last class she attended, I made comment that there were  students would like to have the Saturday class move to a different day because it was summer and they were having conflict with their families. I then made the comment that those in class if they wish to move the class they can put it in group chat. All of them except ***** stated they wanted the change. I then told the class that I ran a democratic policy and that if there was a majority of consensus that we would look into the change.

***** then proceeded to put in group chat why this was a problem for her. She then proceeded to state that she had paid money for this class and wanted things to remain the same. I then admonished to her that this is something that she should discuss with me personally and not put this in group chat.

I then called her and asked her to please put her personal situations in a personal text chat of just her and I and  I gave her options. Option 1 was that there was a class scheduled on Wednesday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm and that would not disrupt her son receiving therapy that day. Option 2 was she could restart the class in November. She then proceeded to tell me that she would have to check with her husband to see and make a Wednesday change at work. So things looked like she could accommodate the change. She was complying. So I thought.

    Outburst #4

Right after that one of the students felt regret for wanting to change the class. Then what proceeded was the comment about her son not being able to receive treatment because of the change. That was totally false. This is where I had made the comment it felt that she wanted me and the students to feel bad for wanting to change the date. I then made the decision of admonishing her 4 different time about the comments in group chat were inappropriate in that forum, I decided to remove her from the class.

I then told her in a personal chat that I would reinstate her but she no longer had the privilege of being in group chat because she refused to comply with my rules. She could ask questions in class but that was the extent of her involvement. I asked her if she would comply with my rule and her response was to state that  she did nothing wrong. She would continue to complain to me asked over and over again why this was happening. I would then copy paste her responses so that she could see that what she was saying in group chat was wrong. She never agreed to comply and then I had no choice but to completely remove her from the course.

It got to the point where she would not commit and because of her conduct she was discharged from the course.

    As for reimbursement:

The course to her was $2300.00 of which she received a $200.00 discount.

She was told that of the $2300.00 $500.00 was for her books and they were non-refundable.

    She paid a total of *******. $1000.00 April 1, 2023, $325.00 05/19/2023 and $325.00 6/23/2023

$500.00 for books leaving her $1150.00

She still had a balance of $650.00 to pay.

She started the class May 1, 2023 and had 18  hours of class instructions.

My charge per class is $75.00/hour which I present to the whole class in a slide presentation. Please see attached presentation.

I gave her 18 hours of instruction at $75.00/hour is  $1350.00

So in essence, she owes me $200.00 of which I will forgo.

The balance of $650.00 of which she did not pay  would have paid $140.00 for AAPC membership, $475.00 for her exams and the rest of the 2 months of instruction.

I would take ***** back into class if she paid her total amount owed so that I could pay for her membership and her exams. I would not put her in group chat. I would give her a personal instruction on the last class she missed at no charge. She would agree to participating in the class Mon- Wed 5:30-7:30pm
