  Last May, Book Writing Experts offered me a package of promotional services for a flat fee. I told them I didn't need one of the services (a cover design; my publisher does that) but they told me that, since it was a package, the services were non-negotiable. I signed the contract and paid the full amount. The person assigned to me showed no evidence of any skill in book marketing, even though one of the services I had contracted for was a customized marketing campaign. Her writing skills were not professional and her phone and email manner were rude. She performed the one service that I didn't need (book cover design), but never completed the others. Then, she stopped returning my emails. In February, she called to say BWE "couldn't do all the things on the list for that price" and they would give me a refund. They insinuated that I was in error for expecting these services at that price. They said even if a partial refund was warranted, they wouldn't give it to me unless they could use the card with which I had originally paid. That card had since been lost and replaced. Now they say they won't give me any refund at all because they completed all the services on the list and have a record of my total satisfaction, which is not true. I told them that if they would neither complete the work nor refund my money, they would be in breach of our contract. They then said, "Don't threaten us with legal action." I paid a lot for the eight things they are contractually obligated to do for me, and have nothing to show for it except the one thing they knew I didn't need done. Now they are taking a hostile and vaguely threatening stance toward me. My research reveals that BWE has done similar things to other writers. What they are doing is illegal. They should be investigated and shut down. My advice to writers is to steer clear of this company at all costs.
