On 7/6/24 I took vehicle in for an oil change and subsequently started having issues with car until it started overheating and rendered Uncooperative....! Engine is useless and estimated cost to replace is over $ *****...!

    Business Response

    Date: 08/03/2024

This is the first time we are hearing this issue from the client. If there was an issue after the oil change, the client should have contacted us immediately so that we can remedy the issue. We weren't even sure what car this client was talking since very little information is given.

Regarding the over heating, that is a cooling problem - not a lubrication problem. Oil change is lubrication maintenance. IF we failed to put oil in the engine, the engine would have experienced failure in minutes. There is a temperature gauge on the dash of the vehicle that should have shown the car was beginning to overheat. It is the clients job to pay attention to any abnormalities while utilizing the vehicle and not ignore it until a catastrophic failure has occurred.

Considering the client has an estimate for the engine, we assume the client has brought it to another shop without first contacting us about the overheating or failure in the engine. Therefore, we will consider this outside influence.

Check engine light went on so I took the car in only to be told that it needed new spark plugs and coils costing $1660.00. A week after the repairs are done the check engine light turns on again so I take the car back and they "fix" the issue. Another week goes by and the check engine light turns on again. I planned to take the car back on the weekend but on Thursday 6/8/23 the engine seized while I was at a light at a busy intersection. My car was towed to the shop and on 6/10 the tech notifies me that the engine is unrepairable. I go in person to ask for a refund of the $1660 spent but the shop owner refused and demanded proof that they ruined my car.

We are confirming that yes, we did replace the spark plugs and ignition coil but that has nothing to do with the engine seizing.Spark plugs and coils are for combustion to which the Check Engine light  issue resolved at the time. Customer did not state the Check Engine light came back on nor did we receive a phone/email regarding the Check Engine light issue prior to the vehicle being towed in.

A seize is usually caused by overheating leading to the pistons exerting sufficient friction on the piston walls that the engine stalls. Things expand when hot. Pistons expand when hot. The engine block expands (into the chamber/cylinder), and when the expansions meet, you get a seize.

Often when an engine has seized, the heat and pressure of the pistons against the cylinder walls fuses them together, like a weld. Sometimes the movement of the crank frees it for smooth motion, other times, the weld is stronger than the materials, and it can't be fixed without a complete bottom-end rebuild (often at a cost higher than buying a new engine).

Engine seizing is related to possibly 3 issues: 1) improper lubrication to which we confirmed there was engine oil present when the vehicle was towed it. 2) Insufficient cooling but customer states that the temperature needle never moved to the red. Or 3) catastrophic internal failure. Spark plugs and coils are not related to any of these 3.

I am rejecting this response because: this business also changed my oil pressure sensor. They did not due their due diligence and instead of looking for the issue that caused the check engine light to go on, they just replaced the sensor and charged me $300 to do so. they also released my car and said it was safe to drive when they did no diagnostics to resolve the issues that led to sensor error. Though they say that spark plugs and coils would not cause the engine to seize replacing a sensor with out correctly identifying the issue is blatant negligence and also a huge safety issue. Now my car is worthless and they will not refund me for anything

    Sincerely,

    Business Response

When the vehicle came in February, the vehicle was reading low oil pressure. Upon changing the oil pressure sensor, oil pressure was reading good. If, say, the oil pump was no good, the new sensor would have read low oil pressure as well - that is the purpose of the sensor. If no oil was circulating in the engine, the car would last approximately 1 minute before seizing and considering how it's been almost half a year, oil pump was good at the time when vehicle was present.

When vehicle was towed in, customer did not state any issues prior to the engine shutting off only that it  turned off and would not turn on. Shop was not informed of any check engine light or oil light by the customer.

The foundation of this complaint is that the spark plugs and ignition coil was what caused the engine to break which is reflected in the refund amount requested. Upon rebuttal from the shop, new information is now being presented separate from the initial complaint. If every rebuttal from the shop is going to have new information presented against us that differs from the original complaint, this is, quite frankly, a waste of all of our time.
