I adopted a dog from an organization Seniors 4 Seniors in June 2017 for a $500 donation or adoption fee. At the time I was given paperwork and instructed to register him with Pet Key and we did. In Sept ******************************************************************** a horrible accident and unable to walk him. At the time he had his harness on which had his tags and information. I immediately posted his picture and information to different platforms. I would constantly call Pet Key to see if anyone reported him found and was told they searched the national database and was not found. My dos vet office and groomer were was also checking as well. I joined a group online where several people did animal rescue and was told the questions to ask. My final call to Pet Key and was told that he was not found according to the national database search but I should call the chip manufacturer that being Avid. I was horrified to hear that my dog was re -registered/registered to someone else. I asked how could this happen and was told that I was required to register with the chip manufacturer which I was not made privy to upon adopting the dog but given pamphlet for a different company. In speaking with a individual at Avid the person whom my dog is now registered with stated they couldnt remember the name of the rescue organization they got him from and more than likely not required to provide that information although he was originally chipped in 2016 and 4 years later the dog was just being adopted from that shelter. In my opinion Avid and if obtained from the nameless shelter both acted irresponsibly in registering my dog without verification of the adoption from a reputable agency/shelter. I dont believe they even tried to reach out to the organization they sold the microchip to and question the validity since it had been years. Had I known that a microchipped animal could be easily given to someone else there is no way I would have paid that much money for a dog.

Avid sold the microchip to Senior Dogs for Seniors in 2015. We received a call in 2020 to register the microchip, which we did as the microchip did not show as being registered with Avid.  Three years later we received a call from *************************** stating that her dog was stolen 3 years prior. She was given incorrect information by the shelter to register with a company other than Avid. Avid cannot legally determine who the legal owner of the pet is as we are strictly a registration service. If the chip had been registered with Avid or had she contacted us sooner to let us know her pet had been stolen, we would have done everything we could to help in finding her stolen pet and this situation might have been avoided. Per our notes, ****************** says she has filed a police report so it is in the police hands. **** is sorry that ***************** had her beloved pet stolen and that she was given incorrect information by the shelter, but **** is not responsible for misinformation given to her by the shelter.
