    11/16/22 CHECKCARD 1115 THE K******** CENTER FO VENTURA CA *********19*********380 $225.00

I was treated for seborrheic keratosises, some of which were causing irritation and bleeding due to location. Dr. K******** PA classified my visit as cosmetic and only filed the charge for the office visit with my medical insurance.

In the past, Berman Skin Institute treated the condition and filed as medical.

The PA for Dr. K******** made a remark to the effect that I was making sure I got my money's worth and missed an actinic keratosis on my right upper arm. I returned to Berman and had this frozen.

I believe I am due an apology and a refund.

It is important to clarify at the time of your visit that your growths are causing symptoms. The treatment of those growths when symptomatic is covered by most insurances.  The treatment of any other seborrheic keratoses that are not causing symptoms, such as ones that a patient does not like the appearance of, is not covered by insurance, and billing insurance for treating those is considered fraudulent. In your case, we can only bill insurance for treating the symptomatic keratoses.  (As you say, some of them were).  Another office may decide not to charge you for the treatment of the asymptomatic ones, but they cannot bill insurance for these.  We always strive to ensure that communication between our providers and our patients is as clear and thorough as possible.  If you feel that you communicated this to our PA, then please return to our office so that we can discuss it and respond appropriately.

Thank you for sharing your concerns with us.

    Sincerely,

    Dr K********

I am rejecting this response because:

I provided the information regarding my history of AKs and SKs and discussed the SKs at the time of my visit. My insurance does cover SKs causing issues. BUT, more importantly, the PA did not freeze the AK on my right arm which was prominent and larger.

I must ask you to clarify if all of the SK's you requested to be treated were causing symptoms.  Your letter said that some of them were.  You identified one SK at your visit that was causing symptoms and that was treated appropriately, and you were not billed for that one.  If an actinic keratosis was missed then an apology is clearly in order.  I enthusiastically invite you to return to my office so that I can personally examine you to be sure there are no remaining actinic keratoses or symptomatic SK's, which I will readily treat. If you have other asymptomatic SK's that you would like removed I'm happy to do so at no charge as a courtesy.   Just inform my office that I wish to expedite your visit.  We can talk further about your prior treatments at that time as well.  If you are seeking a refund, please share that with my office when you call.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. K********
