All the staff at Brown and Goodkin are very knowledgeable about OPM and FECA cases and they have fought hard for my rights as a disabled federal worker. It is very helpful to me that I don’t have to worry about anything because I know they have my cases under control and if anything happens they will address it and fight for me. The entire office staff is dedicated to their clients and very friendly which is helpful since the issues they handle are stressful for everyone involved. The communication is great and I feel like they actually care about me and my case. I highly recommend them for any federal employment issue.

I was hurt a work, I was a firefighter , and told I would never be one again. In all honesty I was told if I were to be hit in the head, I would become a crippled. I applied for workman's comp and was denied for every little thing you could imagine. The doctor's report was done by a physician's assistant not an MD, or saying they never received papers I sent registered mail. It never ended. I had multiple attorneys over about eight years or so, and found Dan. He asked for a rather large retainer, for me on disability anyway, but kept assuring me I had a good case. He didn't give up even when I would have. There's something about him not many know, but he is on a review board to help work out ways workman's comp rules are handled, but most importantly, he can talk informally to people higher in the agency than most others can. This doesn't mean any rules get bent, or favoritism, just being able to ask a reasonable question about what is going on, and getting an answer that makes sense. He asked a few questions and kept filing, and asking questions, and kept reassuring me that we would win. He arranged everything, from Doctors I needed to see, or forms I had to fill out, he took care of it all. I was apprehensive, because it took a long time, but had faith in him, and I won. I couldn't belive it. After words there was some things to take care of, like switching from disability to workman's comp, retirement, and a few other things, but he helped with all of those. I know for a fact I could call right now, and get him on the phone if I had to. He even answered emails and phone calls after hours and on weekends. If you call him and he tells you, you have a chance, then you do, and he and his staff will take care of you. He's fair on his fees, and belive me he earns them. He's also very down to earth, and talks more like some one you could sit and have a drink with and talk for hours. I can only say after ten or twelve years with no hope I won, and it's because of him.

My experience, and the experience of others I know has been fabulous with this firm. I have recommended this firm to others in need of representation with USDOL OWCP and would not have done so had my experience not been positive. I find them to be honest, responsive, and effective. There are very few firms that handle USDOL OWCP issues nationwide, and in my opinion this firm stands above all of them.

    Happy New Year!

Yes they’re terrible. They had one paralegal working on the case for over a year and then they fired her and still try and charge me for the same stuff that she spells we did didn’t do. Then Mr. G****** said I’ll take it away but then D**** in the billing department says I know nothing about it I’ll get with you they just sent me another bill for 11,000 something dollars worth it for almost $30,000 and never got a result then I complained about it and then they fired me, would you use them know I think it’s time for us to do a class action lawsuit against this law firm

I reviewed your message and am unclear exactly what you were saying when you wrote, "and then they fired her and still try to charge me for the same stuff that she spells we didn't do".  I am thinking maybe you wanted a credit for some work a former employee did on your case?  Maybe you could clarify. In reviewing your information, it does look like your case was always overseen by our supervisory paralegal. I am also unclear where you got the $30,000 figure from, because I do not see that amount showing up anywhere in your case, even as a total amount paid out. I am more than happy to discuss your bill if there is any concern you have regarding your bill.

I am not sure what I can offer to do to help other than go over your bill, but if this is something that could help, please let me know. I recognize dealing with FECA claims with the government is painstaking enough, our goal is to try to make it better and MAKE progress, and I am sorry you felt there was no result. I cannot disclose case information on this forum but am happy to discuss some of the obstacles with you on the phone and absolutely happy to go over the billing.

No professionalism here. I have an injury claim pending with the USPS, so I wanted to reach out to a Federal workers comp attorney to see what my options were. I spoke with Brown for an initial consultation (after I was already screened by his asst.) where I had hoped to find out what they could do for me, you know, basic stuff like: what are my rights? what can I expect to recover? how do these types of cases usually go? do I have a case? Well guess what, Mr Brown asked my three questions, then asked me what can he do for me...? First off, he was on speaker phone and it was difficult to hear or understand him (rude), then he did not tell me anything, except that he could represent me if I surrendered an up-front initial $5000 retainer (greedy), and during the course of the conversation, instead of helping me understand the process and the terminology, he was verbally abrasive and demeaning (disrespectful). I ended the conversation after only 6 minutes because he was so dismisive and nasty...who wants to work with that?

    Hello G***,

We keep records of all our potential new clients. We do not have any record of you being a potential client at our firm.  Your email also doesn't correspond with any information we have on file.

With that said, we do require a $5,000 retainer deposit for certain cases, so it is possible you contacted us under a different name/email address than on file with the BBB. However, I am unable to pull up your personal conversation with attorney Brown.

I am sorry to hear you didn't get the information you needed or expected when you called our firm. There are not many federal employment law firms who handle federal work comp, so I know it is frustrating for federal employees having such limited options.

Unfortunately, "legally" these cases cannot be taken on a contingency basis.  This doesn't mean other law firms do not take them on contingency.  But, we follow the rules because the requirements make it a misdemeanor if attorneys take them on contingency.  We do recognize this puts a tremendous burden on federal employees to come up with the money out of pocket.

These cases also do not 'settle-out' like cases in the private sector.  The amount a case is worth isn't a flat dollar amount. Cases can be open until retirement, or even until death for medical and wages, or you can end up getting a schedule award, or both. Sometimes people hire us to get a claim accepted and then close the case. Other times people want to keep us on retainer permanently. This makes some of your questions difficult to answer, such as, "how much is this case worth?" or "how much is this case going to cost me?".  The attorneys do not take cases unless 1) they believe they can win them and 2) unless they believe they are worthwhile financially for the claimant.

I am sorry to hear you didn't get answers that made better sense to you. I am always willing to speak with you about our fees and how they work. We are an expensive firm, and we try to be upfront about this, so there will be no surprises.  I do hope you were able to find the assistance you needed and that you have an accepted case and good legal representatives working with you now.

We wish your attorney fees were paid for on your behalf, or built in like they are in the private sector, but these are the government's rules, and this is part of why so few attorneys work with this type of law.

I will make sure my staff is aware of your feedback. I believe we can always do better and a big part of that is by knowing what needs improvement.
