I signed up for the gym membership earlier this year for both myself and my partner. Neither of us ever actually never went into the gym or used any of the facilities. We went into the gym on June 12th to cancelled both memberships because they make it impossible to cancel your membership online. Today I was again charged for another month that we will not use. That is illegal. When a customer cancels a contract, they are essentially terminating their obligations under that agreement. Billing cycles are internal to the business and do not override the customer's right to cancel. If a customer cancels before the next billing cycle, the business should not charge for that cycle. You cannot charge me for a service you are NOT providing.

I've been working out on resistance machines 3X/week at gyms for over 40 years now, belonging to a half dozen different gyms over the decades. Planet Fitness was the cleanest and most well-maintained gym to which I've belonged. However, when I recently asked to cancel my membership because of an upcoming very complex spine surgery that would keep me out of the gym for some months, I allowed my membership to be put on hold under the understanding that my checking account would not be charged. Despite this assurance, my account was drafted for an annual fee. I was told that the policy was read to me at the time I put my membership on hold; it was not. I was told that the policy was emailed to me, which it may have been, but not in an understandable form. I should have been more insistent on the cancellation and feel that I was taken advantage of. I really thought that the management who had been so friendly during my entire membership would show more compassion for my circumstances, but they were incredibly unreasonable even with at least a dozen apologies for their employee who did not read the policy out loud and did not give me correct information, which would seem to support my position.I don't know how long I will be out of the gym, but I've been charged for a 12-month membership regardless.
