    Hired *************************** of Big Foot Landscapes to repair a retaining wall & replace a fence. ****** started the project on 9-6-2022. We agreed on $2000 for labor only; we provided all the materials. He didn't have an official contract, so on the back of his estimate, I hand wrote what we expected, including a sentence for ****** to sign, that I gave him $1000 cash. After lunch, he never returned that 1st day, so I could get his signature. Our neighbor, *****************************, who we are sharing the project expenses with, witnessed me handing ****** the down payment. ****** strung us along for over a month, rarely showing up & giving us a multitude of excuses as to why he couldn't get to our job to work on it. He promised many times that he would be there but he only went a few times & did very little work. Plus, the work that his helper, ***, did around 9-30-22, was unacceptable. Retaining wall not completed properly, fence posts crooked & not set in cement right, uneven, etc... Also, *** used our own wheelbarrow to mix cement but never cleaned it out, so it's ruined. After only 2 days of work, *** didn't return to our house. Then, after no work was done on our project by ****** the entire 1st week of Oct., we finally gave up on him. We hired another company who started on 10-13-22 & finished 10-15-22. This new company, ******* Construction, had to take the retaining wall apart, re-set and secure it. They also had to remove all the posts; some were only 1 foot deep. I emailed ****************** a strongly worded letter on 10-13-22, demanding he return our down payment, plus $861.29 for the ******************* we had to pay the other contractor to undo his poor work. I gave him until the end of Oct. & even offered to settle for half, knowing he paid his helper & bought a little bit of material. I haven't heard anything from the business owner. We are seniors & plan to look into elder fraud, so this doesn't happen to anyone else.
