On May 2, 2024, I visited Beyond Nails for removal of dipped nails and a spa pedicure. This was not my first time at this salon, but the nail tech I was familiar with, was not there. I was given a different tech. During the pedicure, while using the microplane callus remover, the technician applied far too much pressure as he repeatedly scraped the side of my left toe cutting my skin. It began bleeding badly and I asked him to stop, as he was unaware of the injury despite the amount I bled. I then requested a bandage, and he returned with a solution used to stop cuticle bleeding, which refused since this was a deep wound. I again asked for a bandage and after about 3 minutes, he found one and placed it on my ****** toe. He did not wear gloves when handling the bloodied towel, or the bandage I soaked through. He then attempted to polish my toenails after I told him I was leaving. Once I got home, I called the owner of the salon and was told the employee that injured me was new. They claimed to have verified his cosmetology license. Since it was such a deep wound, I was concerned about safety and they claimed his instruments were sterilized, however, I have concerns that they were. This technician had no knowledge of standard precautions, bloodborne pathogens, as clearly demonstrated by his lack of safety protocol, which is a requirement for licensure. The owner offered to pay for any doctor ***** associated with the injury. They claimed to have terminated the employee that evening. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the shop license for ********************** expired in 2019. In a quick review, it appears that some of the technicians working there may also have expired licenses. Now I am concerned that I could have contracted a disease based on their lack of compliance with regulations. I will need to have my blood tested over the next 3 months to ensure I did not contract anything from their lack of compliance.

      Business Response

      Date: 06/04/2024

Hi, I have responded to *************** complaint about her injury at the salon. I have talked to her extensively via text and over the phone. I have told her that I have called my insurance company and they are going to contact her and take care of everything she is aware of this. As of now, I have not talked to her, and the insurance is taking over. She came in the next day and had me finish polishing and doing her nails. She was fine to come in the next day so I feel like her injuries were not very bad at all. We did not charge her for her services when she left that day, and I did not charge her again for her services the next day when she came in.  I dont understand why she has filed a complaint. I have done everything I could to take care of her and now the insurance is taking care of her medical.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

NOTE: Despite the owner's comments that the injury was not significant, over one month later, I still have a sizeable wound on my toe. They initiated a claim with their insurance provider and I am satisfied with the settlement.

However, I would like to ensure their business is properly licensed by the ******** of ************ Occupations in the hope that this does not happen to anyone else.

      Sincerely,

      ***********************
