I purchased a roof from Soderburg to replace the very old roof on my house and it was installed in the summer of 2024. We were told time and again that the roof, gutters, and heat tape were all done to code and would hold up to the very rough ******* in our town. Fast forward to December 30th and we experienced a massive leak due to poor and incorrect workmanship from Soderburg. We immediately alerted Soderburg to the issue as is required in their guarantee and warranty. After a week of Soderburg basically doing nothing other than sending someone out to take pictures and many, many promises to fix the growing issue, they finally said "We aren't going to help because it is an ice daming issue."To be clear: the ice daming was caused by Soderburg not putting heat tape in the gutters, installing the heat tape incorrectly on the roof (going above the skylights instead of the normal 3' wave pattern seen on every neighbors roof), incorrect and improper flashing, and other issues. When I finally lost my temper and yelled a bit (no threats or anything, just sheer annoyance at them messing around for a week then saying "nah, we aren't helping"), they dug their heels in more. Our home owners insurance covered the interior damage, but would not cover fixing the roof as it is a clear case of shoddy workmanship, so we had to pay to fix Soderburg's mess. Soderburg promised to fix things at first and they did not. They refuse to contact us in any way and have taken to stating complete lies. I have a rather large digital file of every communication, file, and picture evidence associated with this entire thing, from initial contact to buying the roof to installing the roof and right on through this whole mess. There are so many lies, false promises, and now gaslighting. I tried to work with them, but I no longer trust them and am anticipating needing to completely replace their horrid, severely flawed roof within the next couple of years as it clearly cannot be trusted.Business Response

Soderburg Roofing was not contracted to supply or install heat tape at the property of ****** ******. This is clearly outlined in the signed contract (attached for reference). We also encourage review of # ** of the Terms and Conditions associated with that contract, which further supports our position.
The heat tape in question was purchased and provided by the homeowner, not Soderburg Roofing. At the time of the roof installation, the homeowner requested our on-site crew to install the provided heat tape. Our team agreed to this as a courtesy. However, the homeowner did not supply a sufficient amount of heat tape to cover the gutters. To be clear:
Soderburg Roofing was not responsible for purchasing or installing heat tape.
The installation performed was outside the scope of the contracted work and done solely at the homeowners request.
The homeowner did not supply adequate materials to cover the roof and gutters as would be standard for a fully functional heat tape system.Additionally, the insurance claim was related to ice damming, not a defective roof. Ice damming is a natural result of snowmelt refreezing in cold gutters, particularly in mountain environments. This is not a result of improper roof installation. The roof was installed in accordance with manufacturer specifications, and we stand by the quality of our work.
Lastly, while we have made efforts to engage with the homeowner to resolve any concerns, our representative was met with inappropriate and aggressive behavior, which made constructive communication impossible.

I am rejecting this response because: Soderburg is again lying. My homeowners insurance judged this leak was caused by faulty workmanship. Yes, there was an ice dam CAUSED 100% by Soderburg's poor workmanship. Seeing as Soderburg happily points to "ice dam" in the warranty but ignores every other word in their warranty including covering poor workmanship, it is clear that Soderburg will not take responsibility until forced to by the legal system. Note: my father-in-law is a lawyer and was able to clearly show several points of Soderburg breaking with their own warranty, so my point of view is not based on ******, but on the understanding of a lawyer who has worked many extremely harder cases.I am happy to give Soderburg one more chance to tell the truth, own up to their mistakes, and compensate us appropriately. If not, I already know what my next steps are based on advise from my father-in-law who is a lawyer.

I am rejecting this response because: this business is operating with zero integrity and think that digging their heels in will do 2 things:1. Absolve them of their responsibilities
2. Make me go away
Unfortunately, neither of those will be happening until they actually honor their own warranty and guarantees. I will keep pursuing this until they remedy the situation properly. Until then, I will keep up this campaign as I have many more actions that can be taken without breaking any laws. I will NOT just go away nor will this situation they 100% created themselves.

On 5-10-2024 Soderburg roofing was supposed to install a new roof on my home in *************. I was promised that the person i hired would be on site to supervise the installation. The supervisor, ******* ******, arrived late and only stayed for a few minutes. While the crew installed the new shingles and ***, they managed to break 6 rafters, and cut through another with their saw. They did not remove the wood shingles before installing the **** This resulted in the roof having grotesque humps, and valleys all over the roof. Their QC guy came and looked at it and said "this is the worst job he has ever seen". ******* *., came and looked at it and said he would not make it right, even though he did say that it was done wrong. The county inspector will not pass the job until the rafters are replaced, and the *** removed in order to remove the wood shingles. a guy came here and said He said he was the owner **** ****. We walked around the house to look at the roof and he said that it looked terrible, and would make it right, or give my money back. When he saw the broken rafters, and chimneys, he said he is not the owner, and would not repair the damages correctly but; could do a quick patch job, that would not include removing the wood shingles that were supposed to be removed before the *** was installed. This would leave me with a roof that it was worse than the one they replaced. It will now cost several thousands of dollars to fix their mistakes. It has been over 6 months with no help for Soderburg. ****, told me to send him a letter asking for my money back, so i did that; but he never did respond. Now i will have to pay thousands more for my roof because they did not use pro's for the installation. I am still asking for my money back, and for the cost of repairing the broken and cut rafters that they destroyed, and the cost of removing the *** they put over the wood shingles, and repairs to the chimneys and gutters, they destroyed, This is their responsibility.Business Response

Soderburg Roofing has made several attempts to rectify the situation on site with providing reasonable and engineer approved corrections. During the majority of the communication the client has been very aggressive, unreasonable and is not willing to allow Soderburg Roofing on the property or to continue to provide solutions. The client has stated that Soderburg Roofing is not allowed on the property and refused to talk to three different representatives for the company who has been trying to resolve the issue and make the corrections. If the client is willing to allow the company back on the property and is willing to be reasonable with the repairs and communicate with us professionally then we as a company are more than willing to correct the issues, however we will not be bullied or forced to provide a full refund when there are other reasonable, engineer approved corrections that can be done.Customer Answer

Below is my point-by-point response to Soderburg Roofings reply to my BBB complaint.
1. Soderburg claims to have made several attempts to approach me with "approved" and "reasonable" solutions.
The damages to my roof are extensive, urgent, and severe, including:
a. Improperly installed OSB material was placed over remnants of the original roof, violating Colorados building code (IRC Section R905.2.6), which requires a clean, solid surface. This caused structural damage and multiple leaks, resulting in water stains and compromised integrity. Substantial evidence, including photographs and inspection reports, is documented.
b. Broken rafters due to improper handling during installation.
c. Damaged gutters left in my yard requiring full replacement.
d. Nails driven into chimneys, causing masonry damage that needs repair.
These issues require full roof removal and replacement to comply with Colorados building code.
Given the extent of the damages, expecting me to trust the same company responsible for this harm is unreasonable, as further detailed below.
2. Soderburg Roofing claims I must cooperate for repairs and that a refund is unreasonable.
After multiple conversations with Soderburg representatives who initially assured me they would resolve the issues, and after more damage and poor workmanship was revealed to me, I reasonably doubted Soderburgs ability to make proper repairs. Any homeowner would. A Soderburg quality control inspector admitted the roof needed full replacement due to improper installation and substandard materials. Another representative later confirmed Soderburg would not handle the necessary repairs as they were so extensive.
I emailed Soderburg on July 24, 2024, detailing the urgent damage, but they ignored it. Their inaction and their own statements forced me to involve the BBB.
Also, under Colorado law, I have a duty to mitigate damages by taking reasonable steps to prevent further harm. With winter approaching and no response from Soderburg, I had no choice but to hire another contractor to protect my property and family. This new contractor has started his work and I will owe him for payment for his initial inspection and further repairs.
3. Soderburg Roofing claims I was aggressive, refused access, and avoided communication.
False claims and distractions like this highlight why I turned to the BBB. I allowed Soderburgs representatives onto my property multiple times in a cordial and friendly manner and was even complimented on my patience given the circumstances. I am a disabled man with a minor daughter in my home, it is preposterous to claim I would prevent the roofing company from entering my property with winter approaching. We have endured harsh Colorado *******, and I understand the dangers of a compromised roof. I will not be further victimized by defending myself against such claims nor will I allow Soderburg to further deflect from the substantive issues at hand that need to be resolved in finality.
Conclusion:
Given Soderburgs abandonment of the project, failure to act promptly, and the significant costs I incurred and will continue to incur to restore my roof and repair the additional damage caused by Soderburg, including emotional distress caused by living in unsafe conditions with a minor daughter, I reasonably request:
A full refund for Soderburgs work ($5000 approx).
Compensation for additional repairs needed to restore my property and meet Colorado construction codes (asking $3500 approx (although I believe the damage exceeds $5000)).
I appreciate Soderburgs admission to the severe problems in their BBB response and hope this acknowledgment signals a swift and fair resolution.
I trust Soderburg will take responsibility for the damage caused and resolve this matter promptly. I remain committed to a fair solution, which is in both parties best interests. I urge Soderburg to resolve this matter efficiently, respecting the need for an efficient resolution.
Thank you for your prompt attention. I look forward to your timely response.Business Response

Soderburg Roofing is/will stand by the position, we have offered to provide the necessary repairs to the damages and the homeowner refused to allow us on the property. Homeowner communicated in text that he did not want us on the property to complete repairs.
Per the terms and conditions of the contract there is no warranty in place as there has not been payment on the balance due for the materials and labor provided. If payment would have been received and soderburg roofing would have been allowed to make the corrections, then all of this could have been avoided.
Soderburg Roofing is not perfect and never claimed to be, we did however try to correct our mistakes. At this time these communications are going nowhere. Soderburg Roofing will agree to issue the $5,000 payments back to the client (as a good will gesture), Soderburg Roofing will not issue or agree to any other payment as this claim was approved and paid for by the insurance company. Nothing was paid out of pocket by homeowner, with the acceptance of the 5k client agrees to release all liability from Soderburg Roofing. With the acceptance of the 5k client also agrees that he will not negatively slander Soderburg Roofing in anyway.

?Hi *****, Thank you for the trust you have placed in ************* to replace your roof recently. As you know there was a need to redo the roof.
There were unremoved items causing the unevenness look on the roof as well as the very short nails that did not go through the decking to grip the wood underneath.
Also, the nailing pattern did not allow for proper adherence either.
We completely renailed the deck with approved decking nails, and nailed the decking with the correct pattern.
Obviously you are now seeing a tremendous improvement in the overall appearance of your roof for those reasons. The drip edge is now level which will alleviate the risk of water infiltration from under the drip edge was raised up in many areas.
We worked very closely with ******** from ************* to ensure we were always performing by their required codes for both the mid-roof and final inspections.
Also, after removing shingles around the cricket area of the chimney,we were able to reflash the chimney correctly as that was also an area of concern.
Thanks again for your trust and patronage! *** ****** ************* Roofing

subject: Re: You have a New Message from BBB Regarding Complaint #********To the BBB, and whom it may concern.
I have after much thought and distress,I have decided to accept ********* roofings offer of returning my $5000 payment. This offer was also made back in June of 2024, with no follow up. It has been nine months, with no word from the roofing company as to how they would rectify the issues with my roof, and the destruction of the rafters, chimneys, gutters and water damage from the leaking roof.. please see the attached estimate of $1550 just to replace the Gutters that they destroyed. I have suffered the loss of a good usable chimney, causing me to have to change from gas appliances to electric appliances in my home. and devaluation of my property. I have suffered the loss of having to repair the broken and cut rafters. The roofing company has stated that they tried to make repairs; but have offered no proof of any such offer. I will accept this offer if payment is received within 14 calendar days of this letter. If payment is not received in that amount of time, I can only assume that this is further abandonment by the roofing company of their responsibility, and be forced to take them to court in order to be made hole for all the damages and loss to my home that Soderburg Roofing has caused. I also ask that the BBB keeps this complaint open until I can confirm that the payment has been received.

On May 19, 2023 a wide spread hail storm hit eastern Colorado, damaging roofs all over the front range. Shortly there after, I contacted my insurance company, Liberty Mutual, on or about 5/18/23, and they sent an inspector out to my house to conduct the inspection. The inspector submitted his findings to Liberty Mutual on 5/22/23. Since I didn't like the attitude of the inspector, I decided to go with Soderburg Roofing & Contracting who had been in the neighborhood drumming up roofing business since the storm. I checked out Soderburg's website and saw that they were an accredited member of your organization.
My wife and I met with Will Bingham and Kevin Cook in our house to go over our roofing options. My wife and I decided to go with a Class 4 stone covered steel roofing material because of a 50 year warranty. Both Bingham and Cook assured us that Soderburg Roofing were experienced with steel roofs and produced literature that gave us the options for color and style.
I told both Bingham and Cook numerous times during our meetings that I wanted the roof done before August 31, 2023 because that is when our insurance policy expired. Bingham assured us
that it would be no problem, our roof was only 2-3 weeks out. The roofing estimate was based on a copy of the insurance adjusters estimated damage of 5/30/23. That insurance adjusters estimate included the house roof, the separate shed roof, window damage, and gutter and downspout damage. Soderburg Roofing came back with the estimate, which I signed on June 15, 2023. July '23 passed with no action from Soderburg. I started calling Soderburg's office Aug 15, 2023 looking for answers. I made 5 calls. no resolution. A partial load of roofing materials was delivered in Sept '23 and later installed. They didn't have enough roofing to do my shed, but they had torn off the asphalt shingles and installed the underlayment, which is now coming up in places. I made 7 calls in Sept & 3 in Oct to get the job doneBusiness Response

We have been in contact with the homeowner about the status of the material needed. There have been 16 emails between the homeowner, Soderburg Roofing and the supply company about the status of the material. Soderburg Roofing has spoken tot he homeowner on the phone on several occasions letting him know the status of the material and apologizing for the delay however we are at the mercy of the material manufacturer and the supplier for the material needed. If the material is not made and shipped we as the contractor can not install it. See below email thread.
