On September 16, 20**, I/my friends called for a tow to ******* **** *** **** *********** ***** **** ******** **) from the side of the highway about a half mile north of Exit ** on **** *****. We were connected to DMAC Towing through an initial dispatcher, then received a call from the driver. This was a roughly ten minute tow which ranges from ~5.7-7.3 miles according to maps. We explained to the driver that we were on the side of the highway and stuck in neutral. We were assured that would not be a problem. We asked about the quote, and we were told the fee is per mile.

The driver told us to stay in the car when he arrived over the phone. When we opened the door to speak to him when he got to our location, he again repeated to stay inside the car. We were inside the car when it was lifted onto the tow truck and towed to the dealership still inside the car, on top of the tow truck. This does not seem safe or standard. When we arrived, the driver told us the price was 731 dollars.

He broke this down by explaining the cost of his vehicle, state taxes, the cost of insurance, state administration fees. The biggest issue is he said there was a fee for not being able to switch into neutral (NOT mentioned over the phone), a highway fee (again, NOT mentioned over the phone). When we explained the situation over the phone, we were told our location and state of the vehicle was not a problem, not that it would incur significant added charges for a ten mile tow. It's worth noting we were presented with the bill while still on top of the tow truck.

This pricing is NOT transparent. After calling the driver to get a better understanding, we were referred to the owner/manager. She stated that drivers handle the cost, which indicates there is no formal structure for quotes. I am disputing the charges with my bank given we were told the quote was based on a per mile fee without any mention of additional fees.
