My 97 year old mother mother was admitted (no she wasn’t; she was “observed” which means insurance will not pay for her rehab) after a fall. The ER experience was busy but adequate. However, in the course of three days I was told at least four diagnoses. When I asked the hospitalist to clarify, he said, “She has a broken bone, why do you think she is wearing a sling?” Of course, I knew that, the issue was whether the rotator cuff was injured. I still don’t know. When it was time to send her out, the care director was consistently abusive and rude. I was told she would get information for me so we could put Mom in the best place. She was abrupt, and I misunderstood, so when a facility called me and wanted to take my mother I refused. Their price was high. This was late in the day so she had to stay another night. Both the care manager and the physician made abusive calls to me, about my refusal to accept their abrupt arrangement. (The doctor also abused Mom’s nurse, thinking she had given me bad advice. She didn’t’t). The next morning I made arrangements with a more suitable place and went in personally to tell the charge nurse. She immediately in my presence called the care manager, and told me that, since I had already made arrangements, the process would go smoothly. At 2:00 I missed a call from the case manager, but returned her call within 2 or 3 minutes. I was told she was on another line and would call me back. I called again twice. Once I left no additional message and once I was disconnected. So I called the new facility. Although I had twice offered to leave a deposit and been refused, I was then told that the hospital would not release Mom till I paid the new place. The case manage lied and said she had been trying to reach me all day. I went directly to the facility to pay. While I was there, the case manager called (I put it on speaker) and berated me so rudely that the woman in admissions just shook her head and I hung up.
