I hired Family Roofing in April 2022 to reroof a large barn, a small barn and a shed. The owner, Charlie B********* asked for $6000 to buy materials. We discussed that buying all the materials at that time would make sense because material prices were rising. Charlie said that he was finishing another job and would be able to start soon. He deposited a check for $6,000 on April 20. He finally showed up to do part of the shed in mid June. After that, he disappeared and there were months of excuses (Covid, illnesses, a death, etc) and not returning emails or phone calls. He finally showed up again in September to start on part of the big barn. He did maybe 1/6th of it and then disappeared again (aunt died, friend died, etc, etc, etc). All in, Charlie was paid $7200 for some work ($1200 for small part of shed that was completed) and materials that were never delivered. As of November, the big barn was still only 1/6th done, the small barn was not started, and the rest of the shed was not started. In SEVEN MONTHS he probably worked only 5 days in total. I said I would call it a day if he paid me back $3200, which is generous on my part. He probably owes me closer to $5000. He has not responded to me repeatedly. He is a thief. I can provided cancelled checks and email correspondence if helpful.
