Based on one positive review from last year, and the price of $6,500, I contracted with Quality Pavement to apply new asphalt to my driveway. To their credit, they were able to come three weeks earlier than originally scheduled, on April 23rd. While everything seemed to go professionally, a fire broke out in my garage four hours after they left. A neighbor witnessed one of the workmen using a torch to fuse the edges. This was verified by the Fire Department Inspector and documented in photographs. Upon closer examination, there was a low spot on the left corner of the garage that the workman was trying to "melt" and even out. The concentration of torch heat and the presence of aluminum siding fed the fire that spread throughout the garage. The question is why was the torch used? I have had asphalt done before and never experienced this. I have information from another neighbor in the construction field that the asphalt was allowed to cool before properly done, and the torch was used to compensate. As a result, my garage and contents were damaged to the total of $42,000.
A few days after the fire, flaws in the asphalt started to appear in the form of dents and depressions that hold water and will pose a slip and fall hazard when ice forms in the winter. Pictures were taken and sent to Richard George, Manager of Quality Paving three weeks after the incident. He did not respond immediately, and after Emailing between May 28th and June 8th, he finally responded by saying that a "work order" was in and the usual procedure was to return to apply a "surface coating six to 12 months after the initial application." I asked him when in October could I expect this. He failed to respond to this question. I continued to remind him of this pending matter, and he started becoming evasive. The failure to correct these problems violates the one year warranty as printed on the invoice. This is a breach of contract. The dents pose a slip and fall hazard when ice forms.
